Josué Rojas: Murals, Paintings, San Francisco and the Central American Influence
Josue Rojas' art is deeply rooted in his upbringing in San Francisco's Mission neighborhood, where he arrived as a toddler escaping the Salvadoran Civil War, a civil war from 1980-1992. Inspired by a passion for mural arts, he joined Precita Eyes Muralists' Urban Youth Arts program at fifteen. After graduating high school, Rojas pursued his artistic dreams, earning a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the California College of Arts and Crafts (2004) and an MFA in Painting from Boston University (2015). From 2017-2021, Rojas was the executive director of the non-profit Acción Latina, promoting cultural arts and housing the Spanish bilingual newspaper, El Tecolote. Notably, his mural "Enrique’s Journey" (2009) in Balmy Alley depicts a Honduran boy's quest for his mother, influenced by journalist Sonia Nazario's book. Presently, Josué Rojas is a freelance artist whose mural production has been painting various murals from 2021-present.
