<p>Welcome to the pilot season of <strong>Artists Talking!</strong></p><br><p><strong>Artists Talking</strong> is a series of co-created public conversations in English with contemporary artists working in Finland.</p><br><p>The program is presented by<a href="www.culturecurrent.org" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> Culture Current</a>, an arts and education non-for-profit based in Helsinki, Finland.</p><br><p>Each episodes consists of an hour-long talk between the host and artistic director of the series - Alexander Komlosi - and a guest artist from a different artistic field.&nbsp;Audience questions follow the conversation.</p><br><p>In each episode, Alex and his guest speak about the same three themes:</p><ul><li>What do we find difficult about making and receiving art?</li><li>Artistic subject matter and technique</li><li>Art in Contexts</li></ul><p><br></p><p>Through the four conversations, we discover themes common to artistic work, and explore issues specific to each guest artist’s field.&nbsp;</p><p>This season, we delve into the fields of dance, theatre, fine art, and music.</p><br><p><strong>SCROLL DOWN FOR EPISODE LIST</strong></p><br><p>The project aims to foster a quality cultural program for artistic communities and the general public. It creates a supportive and casual space to explore each artist’s personality, profession, and the creative process.&nbsp;It builds a shared intercultural space where Finnish and non-Finnish artists have an opportunity to reflect on their work and artistic lives. The talks allow artists and audiences to meet, learn from one another, and deepen mutual contact.</p><br><p>The talks took place 1-2 times a month at Yö Gallery in downtown Helsinki in spring 2023. His play Lyhyt episodi sienisivilisaation universaalissa historiassa was recently presented (February 2023) at Espoo Kaupunginteatteri with Klockriketeater.</p><p>Release date: October 15, 2023</p><br><p><strong>EPISODE 3: Meri Helmi Särkkä</strong></p><p>(Formerly known as Mariam Haji) is a Bahraini multi-disciplinary fine artist who currently lives and works in Porvoo, Finland.</p><p>Release date: November 15, 2023</p><br><p><strong>EPISODE 4: Charlotta Kerbs</strong></p><p>Singer, musician, and songwriter. She is deeply rooted in soul, jazz and folk,&nbsp;but is renowned&nbsp;for her versatility and seamless&nbsp;moving between musical&nbsp;cultures and genres. She works with different mediums ranging from drawing and painting to video and performance. In 2021, Mariam represented the Kingdom of Bahrain in Finland’s most prominent leading Art festival ‘Mänttä Art Festival’. She also represented her country as Mariam Haji in the 55th Venice Biennale 2013 and was the winner of Bahrain's 38th National Fine Art Competition for her “Muse” series, the youngest female artist to receive an honorary award from his Excellency the Prime Minister of Bahrain Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa in 2012.</p><br><p>Meri Helmi and Alex talk about what it means to balance the personal with the professional as an artist, creating art in a way that you stay true to yourself, and the cross-cultural challenges of creating art in Finland. He began writing for theatre in 2000, and has been working professionally in the field since 2003. He is a member of the “New Drama” movement of contemporary Russian playwrights. Mikhail is the author of screenplays and award-winning plays.&nbsp;His play, <em>Lyhyt episodi sienisivilisaation universaalissa historiassa, </em>was recently presented (February 2023) at Espoo Kaupunginteatteri with Klockriketeater.</p><br><p>In this episode, Mikhail and Alex spoke about how to overcome the challenges of language and cultural differences in art-making, the therapeutic function of art, how art can show us the possible consequences of our choices, and how to learn from art you might not like.
