<p>(14 Jul 1995) Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi says she hasn't ruled out becoming Prime Minister one day. The Nobel Prize winner is considering her future after being freed from six years of house arrest in Rangoon earlier this week. Supporters are still flocking to her home and - she's told APTV she'll be guided by the will of the people. Here is a woman little accustomed to having the press on her doorstep. Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is now celebrating the fifth day of freedom after being under house arrest for the past six years. In the light of her release, she is urging countries not to rush to improve relations with Burma following her release because "nothing else" has changed under military rule. But she insists - she will give all she can for the people - perhaps even be their prime minister.</p>

Why Aung San Suu Kyi 'Can't Be Blamed' for Myanmar's Ethnic Cleansing
<p>A grave humanitarian crisis right now is occurring in <a href="https://asiasociety.org/countries-regions/myanmar">Myanmar</a>, where <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/13/world/asia/myanmar-rohingya-muslim.html?action=click&contentCollection=Asia%20Pacific&module=RelatedCoverage&region=Marginalia&pgtype=article">more than 400,000 members</a> of the country's Rohingya minority have fled to neighboring Bangladesh following a campaign of rape, destruction, and killing carried out by Myanmar's military. The crisis — deemed a <a href="http://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/worldtoday/rohingya-attacks-a-textbook-case-of-ethnic-cleansing:-un/8896038">"textbook example of ethnic cleansing"</a> by the United Nations Human Rights chief — has also damaged the reputation of <strong>Aung San Suu Kyi</strong>, Myanmar's de facto leader and iconic Nobel Peace laureate, who has <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/10/02/what-happened-to-myanmars-human-rights-icon">downplayed the grievances of the Rohingya</a> and <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/sep/20/fact-check-aung-san-suu-kyi-rohingya-crisis-speech-myanmar">refrained from criticizing the military</a> in her public appearances.</p> <p>Aung San Suu Kyi's silence has attracted <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/sep/08/desmond-tutu-condemns-aung-san-suu-kyi-price-of-your-silence-is-too-steep">widespread condemnation</a>, not least from fellow Nobel laureates <strong>Desmond Tutu</strong> and <a href="https://asiasociety.org/blog/asia/malala-her-father-and-roots-extraordinary-life"><strong>Malala Yousafzai</strong></a>. But in an appearance at Asia Society on Friday, <a href="https://asiasociety.org/countries-regions/australia">Australia</a> Foreign Minister <strong>Julie Bishop</strong> argued that Myanmar's leader "may be taking the blame for matters that are outside her control."</p>
