[…] The 1964 Republican National Convention was held in the Cow Palace in Daly City, California, just south of San Francisco, from July 13 to July 16, 1964. On the Saturday before the convention, Goldwater arrived at San Francisco International Airport to a crowd of 4,000 supporters, many from the Young Americans for Freedom and other of his college-age boosters. While he and his supporters may have been a minority in their party, they were an overwhelming majority at the convention itself. Goldwater would later say, quote, The first couple days were spent hashing out the party's platform, And, as you probably guessed, it kept moving more and more to the right, declaring that the federal government was the source of the country's domestic problems and that Republicans had to stop the moral decay in the country, and that the country needed to eliminate bureaucracy in order to cut spending, lower taxes, and lower the national debt.
