Podcast Overview

Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie is the full name of BJ Habibie. He was born on June 25, 1936 in the City of Pare-Pare, South Sulawesi. The third president of Indonesia attended high school at Dago High School, Bandung City in 1954. He then continued his education at ITB (Bandung Institute of Technology). However, only a few months at ITB, he decided to follow in the footsteps of his friends to study in Germany. However, unlike the others, he did not use a scholarship from the Minister of Education and Culture to continue his studies in Germany but at his mother's own expense, R.A. Tuti Marini Puspowardojo. Given Bung Karno's message about the importance of mastering technology with a national perspective, namely maritime technology and aerospace technology, when Indonesia was still developing, BJ Habibie was finally given the opportunity to study in Germany. At that time the Indonesian government under Soekarno aggressively funded hundreds of bright Indonesian students to undertake education abroad and study there. Habibie is the second group among hundreds of high school students specifically sent to various countries. Then Habibie chose the Aeronautical Engineering major with a specialization in aircraft construction at the Rhein Westfalen Aachen Technische Hochschule. The education that BJ Habibie took abroad was not a crash course education but was a school for years while doing practical work. Since the beginning, Habibie was interested in how to build commercial aircraft for the Indonesian people which was Soekarno's idea during his tenure. From there then emerged strategic companies, including PT PAL and one of them IPTN. Then when BJ Habibie arrived in Germany, Habibie had the determination to really go abroad and had to go home with success considering the hard work of his mother who paid for his college and daily life. Several years later, in 1955 at Aachean, 99% of Indonesian students studying there were awarded full scholarships. Only he has a green or private passport than other friends. For Habibie overseas, the holiday season is not a holiday for him, it is actually a golden opportunity that must be filled with exams and looking for money to buy books. After the holiday period ends, all activities are put aside except studying. In contrast to other friends, they mostly use summer vacation time to work, gain experience and money without taking exams. Then in 1960, BJ Habibie received his Diploma Ing, from the Technische Hochschule with the predicate cum laude (perfect) with an average score of 9.5. With the engineering degree already pocketed, young Habibie enrolled himself to work at the Talbot Firm which was a German railway industry. After that he then continued his studies to get a Doctorate degree at the Technische Hochschule Die Facultaet Fure Maschinenwesen Aachen then married in 1962 to Hasri Ainun Habibie who then brought to Germany. His life was getting tougher in Germany, in the morning Habibie had to walk quickly to his far away work place to save on living expenses then come home at night and study for his studies. It is full of twists and turns, but finding something sweet at the end of his life by returning to Indonesia to make Indonesian aircraft then become president of the Republic of Indonesia.
