Podcast Overview

Being a badass is about owning your shit. It’s about honest self-reflection, looking your fear in the face, and saying, “Hey, you classy bitch. I see you. I get it. But I won’t let you hold me back.” Being a badass is about finding and using your most authentic voice, even when your opinion isn’t popular. (But we badasses are respectful. Speaking our truth without being an asshole in the process. Just sayin’.) Reconnecting with your inner badass is a journey. It takes daily effort and intention, a great deal of reflection, courage, and normalizing the “abnormal.” Badass Is the New Skinny is where we’ll have conversations about the thoughts, feelings, and actions that contribute to your inner badassery. You’ll hear more about how I navigate the shit show of being a type-A, neurotic, people-pleaser who cares way too much what other people think, and what I’ve learned along the way. You’ll get all the tips, tricks, self-care, self-grace, habits, behaviors, questions, and more that helped me take on my fears and figure out my shit. So join me for new episodes every Thursday, and let’s celebrate the struggle, the wins, the lessons, and all that good stuff on this journey to feel like our best and most empowered badass.

057 | Food and Nutrition Propaganda - Who Can You Trust?

My friends, in this episode, we're talking about food and nutrition propaganda and asking ourselves the question: who can you trust? When you think about how nutrition information is shared, you have to consider the source, and then... you have to question the source.

It's a lot of responsibility on you, I know.

In today's chat, I share a high-level history of food and nutrition recommendations from the good ol' USDA - the United States Department of Agriculture.

The intention with this conversation is to shed some light on where recommendations come from and remind you to be curious and skeptical. It's also to say that general guidelines are just that - they're general. That means your needs and what's right for you might look different, and that's OK.

Thanks for joining me for this adventure!

Join the Conversation!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic. 056 | The Profitable Business of Keeping People Unwell

Have you ever stopped to think about how much profit there is in keeping people unwell? In my day job, there are a ton of conversations about community health and how, collectively, sickness costs people more and it’s in our communities’ best interests to have a healthier community. Caring for people who are sick is expensive—it’s expensive for health insurers, it’s expensive for companies offering health plans, it’s expensive for government programs, and it’s especially expensive for individuals and families.

So why then are we struggling so much as a nation to finally get well?

Because being unwell is very, very profitable for select industries.

When you inject pharmaceutical companies, lobbyists, power-hungry government officials, and corporate greed, it becomes a very different conversation.

In this episode, I dive into more about what I've learned about the industries that are profiting from keeping you and our society unwell. My goal is to shine some light on some factors at play that could be making it harder for you to achieve your health and wellness goals, and give you some things to consider so that you can be a savvy consumer and self-advocate.

Resources and Articles

Lobbying Expenditures and Campaign Contributions by the Pharmaceutical and Health Product Industry in the United States, 1999-2018

Statista: Global pharmaceutical industry - statistics & facts

Selling sickness: the pharmaceutical industry and disease mongering

Who pays the bill and who makes the profit in treating chronic disease?

Functional Fitness Solutions

Website

Instagram

Facebook

TikTok

Join the Conversation!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic. 055 | Why People Overeat

The question around why people overeat (or, more specifically, why I overeat) is one that plagues a lot of us. Why do we eat to the point of discomfort? Why do we eat when we're not hungry? Why can't we stop eating once we've started?

These are all great questions, and there's no simple answer. Like most things, the answers to these questions will vary wildly depending on each individual person, their history, circumstances, genes, lifestyles, and so much more.

But in the meantime, it's at least worth talking about why people overeat. My goal for you in this episode is to shed some light on things that could be happening in your life, giving you a starting point to explore with curiosity and find solutions to help you overcome overeating, if that's a relevant goal for you.

Join the Conversation!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic.
