[…] It's easy to imagine that, in another reality, Bill Matthews might have received a pardon and reunited with Hattie. They might have started a farm and raised a family. leaving his outlaw days behind to become just part of his distant past that there are children whispered about in hushed tones. But that is sadly not what happened. On August 4th, 1896, Ty Floyd fever claimed the life of Hattie Van Clevelas. Bill Matthews was paroled from the Walla Walla prison 17 days later. He never got to say goodbye to the woman he loved. who was both dead and buried by the time he walked free. Whatever change had happened to Bill in prison was now gone, and the effort he'd made towards reform washed away with Hattie. […]
