[…] So that was somewhat of a shocking question, but still one I think the Presidio is a quintessential microcosm of the history of the Trans-Mississippi West, bridging everything from pre-contact because, of course, California's rich heritage is going back who knows how long with First Nations, Native peoples, with their very diverse cultures, languages, customs, and such. Through the Spanish, through the Mexican period, literally all the way through every major conflict that the country had had from World War to One, Spanish-American War, the Pacific adventures in the Philippines and the expansion from a small kind of constabulary force to an international power to ultimately the Cold War and with the end of the so-called Cold War, the end of the Presidio's necessity and its conversion by happenstance, chipping away from Angel Island with the state parks to what became the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, essentially starting with Fort Point. one of the magnificent urban parks.
