About Canucks Only

Shylo Smith is a former high-level goalie who as a 15 & 16 year old got to train in the summer with "YOUR VANCOUVER CANUCKS!" Rob Young hung around TV stations (OK, worked), and for a while worked every home Sportsnet broadcast from 2008 to 2014. But more importantly, we're fans just like you. Die-hard, long-suffering West Coasters, that care so much our Canucks. Shylo and Rob love the game, and love their team. They talk hockey and might have a couple of good takes once in a while too. Let's Go Canucks! Let's go Canucks Only!

Hockey is finally back! (Preseason that is)

Rob and Shylo dig into the Canucks' first preseason action, what actually matters in exhibition games, and whether the NHL could use preseason as a way to bring new fans into the building with dramatically cheaper tickets. The early standout is Braeden Cootes, whose skating, vision, puck pursuit and confidence have Rob and Shylo wondering just how close he may be to NHL-ready. They also discuss the early goaltending performances, Vancouver's familiar struggle to generate shots, and why Caleb Malhotra may be exactly where he belongs developing in the NCAA rather than being rushed toward the NHL. Then it's time to look beyond Vancouver and survey the Pacific Division. Anaheim's massive contracts and cap situation raise questions about how quickly an emerging contender can suddenly become financially squeezed, while Calgary joins Vancouver in rebuild territory. San Jose is a completely different story, with Macklin Celebrini accelerating their timeline and a young roster that suddenly looks capable of causing serious problems throughout the division. Los Angeles remains dangerous but aging, Seattle becomes the source of one of Rob and Shylo's biggest disagreements, and Vegas remains... well, Vegas: loaded with talent while somehow performing its annual salary-cap gymnastics. Edmonton gets deliberately saved for a deeper discussion on an upcoming episode, although Rob and Shylo can't resist getting into the Oilers' goaltending decisions and some of their more puzzling roster moves. Finally, the guys attempt to sort the Pacific into tiers. Shylo sees San Jose and Seattle potentially climbing behind the established powers, while Rob isn't nearly as convinced about the Kraken. One thing they're considerably more comfortable with: Vancouver may be spending this season much closer to the bottom than the top. For a rebuilding Canucks team, that might not be the worst thing in the world. We're fans, just like you.

   Training Camp is almost here!

With training camp just days away, Rob and Shylo officially kick off the countdown to a new Canucks season. After 143 days without a game, the excitement isn't necessarily about playoff expectations... it's about finally seeing what this new-look roster can become. The conversation begins with the players they're most excited to watch this season. Zeev Buium tops the list, with Shylo explaining why pairing the 20-year-old with Filip Hronek could accelerate his development and why Vancouver may have locked him into one of the NHL's best contracts before the salary cap explodes over the next several years. The focus then shifts to the bottom six, where the guys argue this season should be about youth, opportunity and long-term growth rather than chasing a playoff spot. From there, Rob notices something subtle on the Canucks roster: a surprising number of players have changed jersey numbers. That turns into a fun rabbit hole about hockey numerology, including why Bo Horvat chose No. 14 with the Islanders, Quinn Hughes inspiring a wave of young defencemen wearing No. 43, and the personal stories behind players' favourite numbers. The episode also celebrates Bo Horvat being named captain of the New York Islanders. While both hosts are happy to see Horvat earn another captaincy, they debate whether Vancouver made the right decision moving on from him and whether nostalgia should ever outweigh a rebuilding plan. Later, Rob shares recommendations from the Canucks Insider podcast, including memorable interviews with Chris Higgins and Kirk McLean, along with a story about unexpectedly watching a Canucks playoff game sitting beside Higgins at a Vancouver restaurant. The second half dives deep into fantasy hockey and the NHL's Top 250 fantasy rankings. Macklin Celebrini's lofty ranking sparks a discussion about expectations, while the biggest shock comes when Elias Pettersson appears as the first Canuck all the way down the list. That opens a lengthy conversation about Pettersson's role in the rebuild, how much patience management should have, when reduced minutes become appropriate, and whether Vancouver should prioritize developing younger players over forcing opportunities for an $11-million star who still hasn't rediscovered his game. Ultimately, Episode 59 becomes less about predictions and more about philosophy. For Rob and Shylo, this season isn't defined by wins and losses. It's defined by development, accountability and finding out which players are part of the Canucks' next competitive window.

What does it mean to be a Canucks fan? Trivia time with Shylo

With the Canucks deep in the quietest part of the offseason, in the Summer of Nothing Part 2, Rob and Shylo turn a slow news week into a trip through more than 50 years of Vancouver hockey. After touching on Caleb Malhotra's viral summer workout with Macklin Celebrini and the signing of Adam Novotny, the conversation shifts into something much bigger: what does it actually mean to be a Canucks fan? For Shylo, suffering is almost part of the identity. Decades of close calls, disappointing seasons and brief stretches of brilliance have created a fanbase that is intensely loyal, passionate and occasionally less than emotionally stable. From the bandwagon debates of 2011 to memories of the 1982 and 1994 Cup runs, the guys explore how generations of losing have shaped the culture around the team. That leads into a long-form "get to know Shylo" conversation through Canucks history. Trevor Linden emerges as his favourite player to watch, while Dave Babych holds a special place because Shylo actually got to share the ice with him as a teenage goalie. He recalls practicing alongside Linden, Greg Adams, Geoff Courtnall, Doug Lidster and Gino Odjick, including the unforgettable experience of making a save on Linden after Babych quietly gave him a little defensive advice. From there, Rob and Shylo travel through the eras: King Richard Brodeur, Pavel Bure, Alexander Mogilny, Markus Naslund, the West Coast Express, the Sedins and the unforgettable 2010–11 team. The discussion becomes less about statistics and more about the players who defined each generation, the leadership torch that passed from Stan Smyl to Linden to Naslund to the Sedins and Bo Horvat, and what may have been lost when that chain finally broke. The episode eventually dives fully into hockey-history hypotheticals: the best winger for the Sedins, favourite Canucks goalies, and who you'd trust in net for Game 7 of a Stanley Cup Final. Shylo ultimately gives peak Thatcher Demko the start, Roberto Luongo the backup role and Jacob Markstrom the press box seat. What started as a summer episode with "nothing to talk about" becomes one of the show's deepest dives into why Canucks fans care so much in the first place. Because being a Canucks fan has never just been about winning. If it were, we'd all have quit a long time ago. #Canucks #VancouverCanucks #CanucksOnly #CanucksNation #CanucksHistory #TrevorLinden #PavelBure #SedinTwins #MarkusNaslund #RobertoLuongo #KirkMcLean #ThatcherDemko #NHL #Hockey #HockeyPodcast #CanucksPodcast #HockeyHistory #Vancouver #SportsPodcast #HockeyFans
