[…] Basil, or the Basilians, which is not to be confused with the Brazilians. That'd be people from Brazil. The Basilians arose during the turmoil and persecution of the Catholic Church during the French Revolution and its reign of terror. Founded in France around 1822, they arrived in Canada in 1850 upon the invitation of Toronto's bishops. and then opened St. Michael's College a couple years later. Charles Coghlan joined the Bazilians and was ordained as a priest in their congregation in 1916. His first assignment was teach at Assumption College in Windsor, Canada. In 1922, the Bazilian Fathers in Canada decided to split from the Bazilians in France, forming separate religious congregations. […]
