[…] We don't know what comes first, bread or beer. And in fact, the Egyptian hieroglyphs sometimes even fudge that word. And it's sometimes hard to tell the difference what they're referring to. which seems odd. Why would one of humanity's oldest advanced civilization confuse these two terms? Well, because they essentially provided the same service. When we think of beer, we think of something crystalline, often clear, if not fairly clear, fizzy and bitter to hide the bitterness of the alcohol and the leftover sugars from fermentation. Don't think of that when you're thinking Egyptian beer. Essentially what they would do is take grain, leave it in a jar with water, okay, and seal it up. […]
