<p>Nuovamente la viltà, il "ripensarci", ma questa volta - diremmo - a ragion veduta: Dante ha già fatto un pezzo di cammino e si sente impietrito (il richiamo a Medusa non è casuale...), tanto da accarezzare l'idea di tornare indietro. Ma l'Angelo, la cui venuta era attesa dalla metà del canto 8, finalmente arriva e, senza nessuno sforzo spalanca la porta di Dite. Virgilio e Dante possono, dunque, proseguire il loro cammino.</p>

<p>Ancora nello Stige, Dante vede le torri della città di Dite. Per la prima volta, in questo canto si rivolge al "lettor" per confidargli la sua paura di essere lasciato solo in quell'Inferno. Ma Virgilio gli ricorda che la battaglia con i demòni è già stata vinta. Il segno? Quella porta "men segreta (...) sovr'essa (...) la scritta morta" che all'inizio del loro cammino hanno attraversato è stata scardinata dall'arrivo di Cristo.</p>
