[…] Letters dispatched from the Navy office to both houses of Congress on April 10th reported South Carolina's request for the retired Yorktown, a legal requirement giving members of Congress 60 working days or three months to file any objections to the proposed transfer. The deadline for congressional objection passed quietly in mid-July 1974, after which the U.S. Navy formally approved the sale of the Yorktown to the Patriots Point Development Authority. South Carolina's Attorney General signed a contract for the ship's conveyance in October and returned the legal paperwork to Washington. Navy officials ratified the contract in early 1975 after confirming receipt of a birthing plan for the Yorktown within Charleston Harbor and the necessary work permits issued by the U.S. […]
