The Mentorship Sessions E5 Emily Harrington and Hazel Findlay
In this final episode of the mini series The Mentorship Sessions, we are delighted to be joined by Emily Harrington and Hazel Findlay. Both of these women have accolades and accomplishments that speak for themselves, but let go ahead and name a few to start off. Emily was the fourth woman ever to free climb El Cap in a day, and the first woman to do so via the Golden Gate route, she's summited Mount Everest, is a very accomplished comp climber, and has the first female ascent of a number of worldwide 5.14s. Meanwhile Hazel has been a pro climber for over a decade, she was the first woman to climb a trad route rated E9, she's put up multiple first ascents on big walls, she was the 3rd person to send Magic Line (5.14c) in Yosemite, and is the Founder of StrongMind which focuses on mental training and fear management. The two of them were once teammates on the North Face team and went on a number of adventures across the world including a trip to big wall in Morocco, which we get into. They both discuss how becoming a mother has changed their approach to fear and risk management, and how to trust (and when not to trust) a mentor, setting boundaries, and their own mental training. E61 Does Climbing Media Under-Hype Women's Accomplishments?
In this episode—brought to you by OCUN, engineered for climbing—Kyra Condie and Freddie Kolwey dive into the numbers behind elite bouldering: how many women have climbed V14 or harder, how many men have climbed V16 or harder, and why climbing media still doesn’t give women’s achievements the attention they deserve. They unpack the shrinking space for stories that aren’t tied to being “the first,” and how that pressure shapes which accomplishments make headlines. They also explore the frustrating pattern where a climb seems to lose some of its perceived impressiveness once a woman does it, and how this dynamic can unintentionally pit women against one another. Later, they break down the recent World Championships in Seoul, South Korea, and Kyra shares her experience at a uniquely formatted competition in France. E60 HOT TAKES: Athletes Endorsing OnlyFans, the Glorification of Free Soloing, and Sports-Washing
CONTENT WARNING: Nothing too scandalous is talked about in this episode, but we do refer to the platform OnlyFans and if you are a parent, maybe listen to this episode first before letting someone under 18 listen! If you are under 18, please talk to your parent, guardian, or trusted adult before listening. With that said, this is our next episode in our series of "ethical debates" in climbing and sport. We start with the apparent glorification of danger, specifically free soloing and highballing and how it relates to the age of social media and click baiting. We then discuss how OnlyFans has been offering athletes contracts to endorse their platform and use it however they want to--we discuss whether this would change your career as a professional athlete or limit potential opportunities. That leads to a discussion about the use of athletes to garner positive public perception and how the "Enhanced Games" are doing just that for big pharma and venture capitol firms. We also go a bit more climbing specific and talk about whether it still counts as a "flash" if you've trained on a 3D printed replica before trying an outdoor boulder. This was spicier than our typical episodes so PLEASE let us know what you think!
