[…] And so in the aftermath of World War II and the acknowledgement that our government denied Americans our most basic rights... In the name of fighting that war, steps were taken in the 1970s by Congress in an attempt to stop it from happening again. Here's then-Senator Dianne Feinstein, one of the fiercest opponents of indefinite detention, speaking in that Senate hearing in 2012. Congress passed and President Nixon signed into law something called the Non-Detention Act of 1971. And subsequently, Ronald Reagan made an official apology when he was President of the United States. The Non-Detention Act clearly states this, and I quote, it's very brief, no citizen shall be imprisoned or otherwise detained by the United States except pursuant to an act of Congress, end quote.
