[…] Now let's go back to William Weber. So William Weber, who's the defense attorney, went public in 1979 saying that he and the Lutzes had made up the horror story over many bottles of wine. And his motive was to support a possession defense for a DeFeo retrial and a book deal of his own. The Lutzes said that William Weber had pitched them and they turned him down. The resulting lawsuits went badly for the Lutzes. A federal judge said the evidence suggested the book was largely fiction built on Weber's suggestions. Then the next owners, who are Lorenzo's neighbors, Jim and Barbara Cromartie, lived there for about a decade and reported nothing unusual. […]
