Episode 49 | When Life Changes Overnight: Faith, Caregiving, and Finding Yourself Again | Linsday Kelly
In this deeply personal and emotional conversation, Lindsay Kelly shares her experience of navigating life after her husband, Reed, was diagnosed with progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2019. At the time, they had six children under the age of 15. As her husband's condition progressed, Lindsay found herself taking on the roles of full-time caregiver, mother, and primary provider while trying to understand the dramatic changes in his behavior and personality.
For years, Lindsay struggled with her husband's unpredictable mood swings, emotional outbursts, and memory loss. She often felt misunderstood by others who couldn't see what was happening behind closed doors. When medical professionals eventually connected his behavioral changes to MS, she experienced both relief at finally being believed and overwhelming grief about what the diagnosis meant for her family's future.
Faith, family, and the kindness of others became essential sources of strength. Lindsay describes moments when prayer brought her comfort, neighbors unexpectedly helped with everyday tasks, and family members reminded her that she didn't have to face everything alone. Eventually, her husband moved into assisted living, providing Lindsay and her children with much-needed relief from the demands of daily caregiving.
The conversation also explores the difficult process of rediscovering her identity. Lindsay reflects on how marriage, caregiving, and years of emotional strain changed her sense of self. Through therapy, she began to recognize that even when hurtful behavior isn't intentional, its impact can still be real. She learned that acknowledging her own suffering doesn't mean she has stopped loving her husband.
One of the episode's most memorable lessons comes from a story about an injured hunting dog. The dog's owner initially became frustrated when it stopped following commands, only to discover that it was bleeding and in pain. Lindsay connects this story to human behavior: sometimes what looks like weakness, anger, or failure is actually a sign of unseen suffering.
Ultimately, the episode is about learning to see ourselves and others with greater compassion. Lindsay encourages listeners to look beyond appearances, support caregivers without judgment, maintain their individual identities, and act on the instinct to help. Her story illustrates that faith doesn't eliminate hardship, but small acts of kindness and meaningful relationships can make difficult seasons more bearable.
