Start Spreading the News - The First Independence Day | Liberty 250

For an entire year, Liberty 250 has followed the road to American independence.

We have walked the streets of Boston during the Stamp Act crisis. We have stood beside Patrick Henry as he challenged imperial authority. We have watched the Sons of Liberty organize resistance, followed Benjamin Franklin's transformation from loyal British subject to American patriot, and listened as Congress debated whether thirteen colonies should become thirteen independent states.

Now, at last, we arrive at the destination.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, on July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress approved a document that changed the course of history. The Declaration of Independence announced to the world that a new nation had been born. Yet the Declaration was more than a declaration of separation. It was a statement of principles, a claim about human dignity, self-government, and the rights of a free people.

In this special Liberty 250 finale, we celebrate the Semiquincentennial of the United States by exploring how those words left Independence Hall and spread across a continent. We will follow the first public readings, witness the celebrations that erupted from Philadelphia to Savannah, examine the Loyalist response, and reflect on the meaning of the Declaration after two and a half centuries.

This anniversary is not simply about remembering the past. It is about understanding the promise that generations of Americans have inherited, defended, expanded, and debated since 1776. The Declaration began a conversation that has never truly ended.

As John Adams predicted, succeeding generations have marked this occasion with bells, bonfires, parades, and celebrations. Today we join that long tradition.

Two hundred and fifty years later, the words still challenge us. The promise still calls to us. And the story of American liberty continues to be written.

Welcome to the grand finale of Liberty 250.

Hashtags:

#Liberty250 #America250 #DeclarationOfIndependence #July4th2026 #Semiquincentennial #AmericanHistory #FoundingFathers #IndependenceDay #HistoryPodcast #DaveDoesHistory #FloridaRoundtable #SpiritOfAmerica #Declaration250 #AmericanRevolution #WeHoldTheseTruths

The Revolution They Still Don’t Understand | Liberty 250

It Was An Idea that Changed the World...

For 250 years, Americans have been told that the Revolution was about taxes, tea, and a war for independence. British historians often describe it as little more than a colonial breakup. Increasingly, Americans judge it solely by the imperfections of the men who declared independence. But what if both sides are asking the wrong question?

In this final Liberty! 250 episode, Dave Bowman argues that the American Revolution was never primarily about leaving Great Britain. It was about something far more profound: a revolutionary idea that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, and that all people are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.

Drawing on the words of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and Martin Luther King, Jr., Dave explores why the Declaration of Independence became the most influential political document in history, while the grievances that occupied most of its pages faded into the background. The episode also examines modern misunderstandings of the Declaration, from those who dismiss it because the Founders failed to live up to its ideals to those who celebrate the Founders without acknowledging their shortcomings.

The program concludes with a deeply personal reflection, "The Line That Stretches Back," tracing one family's journey from Lexington Green through the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War II, the Cold War, and into the present day. It is a reminder that liberty is not inherited automatically. Every generation receives it, preserves it, and passes it on.

As Liberty! 250 comes to its conclusion, this episode asks a simple but profound question: Was the American Revolution really a war against Britain, or was it the beginning of an idea that continues to shape the world today?

#Liberty250 #AmericanRevolution #DeclarationOfIndependence #ThomasJefferson #JohnAdams #AbrahamLincoln #FrederickDouglass #MartinLutherKingJr #History #AmericanHistory #USHistory #FoundingFathers #FourthOfJuly #IndependenceDay #WeHoldTheseTruths #ConsentOfTheGoverned #NaturalRights #Liberty #Freedom #Constitution #FoundingEra #RevolutionaryWar #Patriot #AmericanExperiment #CivicEducation #HistoryMatters #DaveDoesHistory #PlausiblyLive #AmericanExceptionalism #FoundingPrinciples #Declaration250 #250YearsOfAmerica

Out On Sullivan's Island | Liberty 250

The American Revolution was only days away from declaring independence when one of the most important battles of the war took place on a sandy island outside Charleston, South Carolina. It is a battle that many Americans have never heard of, yet its consequences helped shape the future of the Revolution and saved the South from British occupation for nearly four years.

In this episode of Liberty 250, we travel to Sullivan's Island and the remarkable Battle of Sullivan's Island on June 28, 1776. Facing one of the most powerful fleets in the British Empire, Colonel William Moultrie and his men occupied an unfinished fort built from an unlikely material: palmetto logs. General Charles Lee dismissed the fort as a "slaughter pen" and urged its abandonment. Fortunately for the Patriot cause, South Carolina leaders refused to retreat.

As British warships unleashed a massive naval bombardment against Fort Moultrie, something extraordinary happened. The spongy palmetto walls absorbed cannon fire that would have shattered traditional fortifications. Meanwhile, Sergeant William Jasper performed one of the most famous acts of heroism in Revolutionary War history by rescuing the fallen crescent flag under enemy fire.

Join us as we explore the British Southern Strategy, the dramatic defense of Charleston Harbor, the surprising role of South Carolina's palmetto trees, and the unlikely American victory that stunned the Royal Navy. This is the story of courage, leadership, innovation, and one of the defining moments of the American Revolution. It is the story of how a fort that should have fallen instead became a symbol of American independence and South Carolina pride.
