3. De laatste castraten
Daan Esch vertelt over de neergang van het fenomeen van de castraatzangers. Halverwege de 18de eeuw komt er al een kentering. De smaak van het publiek verandert en onder het bewind van Napoleon komt er definitief een einde aan de praktijk. De laatste castraten die nog hoge toppen scheerden waren Gaspare Pacchierrotti, Luigi Marchesi en Giralamo Crescentini. Na hen waren de castraatzangers enkel nog een curiosum dat in de Sixtijnse Kapel te zien en te horen was.

2. De roemrijke tijd van Farinelli
Auteur Daan Esch neemt u mee naar het Italië van de 18de eeuw, naar de wereld van de opera waar op dat ogenblik een ware castraten-manie heerste. Elk had zo zijn eigen manier van zingen. En dat had natuurlijk veel met hun scholing te maken. Er waren in Italië 2 conservatoria die de toon zette : een in Bologna en een in Napels. In Napels was onder meer Nicola Porpora als leraar actief. Zijn beroemdste leerling was Farinelli. En ook Joseph Haydn was bij hem in de leer.
