[β¦] However, by the 1980s and 1990s, governments around the world started realising we have a major, major challenge. People were living longer, birth rates were falling, and the proportion of retirees was increasing. The World Bank became concerned that many countries would struggle to fund retirement benefits over the long term if those trajectories continued. In 1994, the World Bank published a landmark report called Averting the Old Age Crisis. The report proposed a three-pillar retirement system consisting of a government pension, compulsory savings, and voluntary savings. And over the following decade, the World Bank observed pension reforms in more than 80 countries and learned some very important lessons. [β¦]
