   A Protest Song

11/10/2026 - Matthew Destry James 5:1-12 a prophetic lament – to encourage the church Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. the destiny of the rich and unrighteous Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you. Therefore… 1/ be patient Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Application: What faithful thing can you continue doing while you wait… praying, serving, speaking truth, seeking justice, forgiving, or refusing retaliation? 2/ establish your heart Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Application: Establishing the heart happens through repeated practices… Scripture, prayer, worship, communion, and life with God’s people. We keep rehearsing what is true until it becomes the ground beneath our feet. 3/ don’t grumble Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Application: Before speaking against another believer, ask: Is this person truly the source of the problem, or are they simply close enough to receive my frustration? 4/ remain steadfast Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. That makes steadfastness different from emotional numbness. Steadfast people may lament loudly. Their faithfulness consists in continuing to turn toward God. 5/ tell the truth But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

   Unblock The Wells

04/10/2026 - Vincent Gulay James 2:14–23 BIG IDEA: REAL FAITH MOVES FROM BELIEF TO ACTION. Faith — pistis = trust, confidence, belief. Works — erga = deeds, actions, what we actually do. Dead — nekra = lifeless, inactive, unresponsive. James is not saying works save us. He is saying that genuine faith becomes visible through action. James 2:18 — “Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.” At some point, what we believe has to change what we do. FEAR CAN STOP FAITH FROM BECOMING ACTION Fear is real and sometimes legitimate. “Fear is a great warning system. It is a terrible Lord.” Faith does not mean the absence of fear. Faith is demonstrated when obedience becomes bigger than fear. Psalm 56:3 — “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” James 1:2–4 — The testing of your faith produces perseverance. YOU ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OUTCOME. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OBEDIENCE. UNCERTAINTY CAN STOP FAITH FROM BECOMING ACTION Faith is not recklessness or impulsiveness. When we lack clarity, we seek God, Scripture, wise counsel and discernment. James 1:5–6 “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God…” When you don’t know what to do, ask the God who does. Faith doesn’t mean waiting until every unknown becomes known. Eventually, discernment has to become obedience. LACK CAN STOP FAITH FROM BECOMING ACTION Sometimes we lack money, people, experience, ability, time or opportunity. But: GOD OFTEN GIVES YOU THE ASSIGNMENT BEFORE HE GIVES YOU EVERYTHING REQUIRED FOR THE ASSIGNMENT. Planning matters. Preparation matters. But faith keeps moving while you assemble what you need. Philippians 4:19 — “My God will meet all your needs…” 2 Corinthians 12:9 — “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” YOU DON’T NEED TO HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED BEFORE YOU TAKE THE NEXT STEP OF FAITH. UNBLOCK THE WELLS Fear is real. Uncertainty is real. Lack is real. But none of them are Lord. Jesus is Lord. Where is fear determining what I do? Where is uncertainty keeping me stuck? Where am I using lack as an excuse? What can I do right now with what God has already put in my hands? James 2:18 — “I will show you my faith by my deeds.” REAL FAITH MOVES FROM BELIEF TO ACTION. Abraham’s faith was made complete by bringing Isaac to the Altar. What do you need to bring to the altar?

   When the Cup Gets Bumped

27/09/2026 - Kyle Hanna James 4:1–12 THE CUP When a cup gets bumped, what’s already inside spills out. Criticism → anger Success of others → jealousy Correction → defensiveness Uncertainty → anxiety Disagreement → pride The bump doesn’t create what’s inside—it reveals it. Question: What’s been spilling out of me lately? 1. THE WAR WITHIN — vv.1–3 James traces external conflict back to “passions at war within you.” Good desires can become ruling desires: Desire → Demand → Disappointment → Conflict “I’d like this” becomes “I need this to be okay.” Approval. Control. Relationships. Achievement. Comfort. Ask: God, what are my circumstances revealing about my heart? 2. THE GREAT DIVIDE — vv.4–5 Disordered desires eventually compete with God for our allegiance. “Friendship with the world is enmity with God.” We cannot serve two masters. God “yearns jealously”—not sinful jealousy, but covenant love desiring our wholehearted devotion. Who has my heart? 3. GRACE IS BETTER — v.6 “But He gives more grace.” We wander → He gives more grace. We choose other things → more grace. Our desires become disordered → more grace. Grace doesn’t excuse our wandering; grace calls us home. 4. HUMILITY HAS A POSTURE — vv.7–12 Surrender — “Submit yourselves to God.” Draw near — Bring your heart back to Him. Get honest — Let Jesus reveal what’s in the cup. Step off the throne — Entrust yourself to God. RESPONSE Name what’s spilling out. Identify the desire underneath. Surrender it specifically. Draw near instead of hiding. When the cup gets bumped this week, don’t only blame the bump. Examine the cup. Bring what you find to Jesus. He gives more grace.
