Hello and welcome back!
(Also welcoming me back!)

Sorry for not having updated for so long!
In this episode I would like to share with you my decision to continue recording episodes.
Although it might not seem much, it's important to me.
And I hope we can both benefit from it!

Any suggestions, advice or criticism, please leave a message via IG: eating_your_tongue
Thank you :)))

Transcripts

Hello and welcome back to Eating Your Tongue, I’m you host Lisa.

First, I want to apologize for not having updated my podcast for such a long time, that is, over two months!

In fact, I really wanted to quit during these two months, because I thought, no one really listens to it, so what’s the point of spending so much time writing the scripts and recording them? However, here I am again. Why? Because I was encouraged by a YouTuber called George.

For people who have listened to my previous episodes, you might know that I am learning Japanese as well. So, last month, I went to Japan and met up with some Japanese friends. One of them introduced me to this YouTuber, because he thought my attitude towards many things and life in general fit quite well with George’s. And so it is. George is a man’s coach, but I think the ideas that he is preaching, which means teaching or spreading, is suitable for both genders. So, recently, when I have time, I would watch his videos. This also serves as a practice for my Japanese listening.

In one of his videos, he urged his audience to stick to their routines, no matter what. His core concept is that, sticking to our own routines makes us a person who becomes better and better through consistent accumulation. Of course, this is not a novel, or new, idea. If you listen to speeches of successful entrepreneurs, consistency is nearly always among the top three important things to success. However, watching this video reminded me of why I wanted to start this podcast, and my ultimate goal. Therefore, I decided to continue, although I have run away from it for so long.

Now, I am still trying to figure out how best to run this podcast, so if you find some changes in later episodes, please understand that I am doing experiments. Of course, I would welcome any advice and suggestions, so feel free to contact me through Instagram, which is listed in the show note.

Well, it’s quite short but that’s all for today. For old listeners, thank you for your support. For new comers, I hope I’ll be sharing more with you in the future. Until next time then, bye bye!

Today I’m not talking about the New Year, but something we like to give as gifts on special occasions or festivals. That is, tea!

Do you like tea? Or do you prefer coffee over tea? Personally, I am a tea lover. So today I would like to talk about things related to tea.

Do you know that the tea we drink are made from leaves growing on tea trees? According to historical records, tea was originally found in South and Southeast Asia. Wild tea trees can grow very tall, even taller than an adult. But now in tea fields, farmers keep them short, because it is easier to pick.

There are different kinds of tea, and the flavor of them depends on many factors, including their species, the climate, the amount of water they get, the kinds of soils they grow in, and how they are made. The most common kinds of tea are green tea, black tea, and Oolong tea. They are different in their degrees of fermentation, that is, a process that changes some chemicals in the tealeaves into other chemicals. Green tea is the least fermented, while black tea is the most fermented. Oolong tea is somewhere in between.

There are some sayings related to tea too. For example, if you say someone is “not my cup of tea”, you mean that that person is not your type, or not the kind you like. For example, many people think Korean Pop stars are handsome, but they are not my cup of tea.

Another idiom with tea is “a storm in a tea cup”. That means when something is said to be more serious than it actually is. For example, my mom complained about my hair being “out of control”, but it’s just a storm in a tea cup. My hair is just a bit long, that’s all.

Finally, when we say something is as good as a chocolate teapot, it means that that something is quite useless, because, well, think about it: what will happen if you pour hot water into that teapot? It will certainly melt!

Well, that’s all for today. To our question: what kind of tea do you like best? Why? I hope this episode is not as good as a chocolate teapot, and that you have learned something from it. Until next time then! Bye bye!

35. Losing Face⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

中文我們會說「丟臉」,英文也有同樣的講法喔!
「丟臉」英文怎麼說?到底好不好?
來聽聽看我的論說吧!

如果字數超過限制,完整逐字稿都在這裡,
也歡迎追蹤我的IG: eating_your_tongue,
我會不定期新增一些英文格言及小知識!
如果喜歡這樣的創作,也歡迎在Patreon上給我一點支持:)

transcript

Hello and welcome back, I’m you host Lisa.

In Mandarin, we have the expression 丟臉. You know what? It is the same in English! The expression to lose face means to be embarrassed, or to suffer humiliation.

Most people dread losing face, because it feels really bad. We humans are social animals, that means we live in groups. So losing face implies losing one’s reputation, or social status, which might damage the survival of the individual. This is of course, reasonable. However, I think sometimes the fear of losing face would also impede our own growth and the chance to succeed. So today, I would like to defend for losing face. I want to argue that losing face is not always a bad thing, and that we can actually benefit from it.

There are some benefits of losing face. For a start, losing face is a way to draw out your motivation. When you lose face because you did something wrong, the feeling of humiliation and shame can drive you to do better next time. For example, I once tried to help two Japanese tourists, but I misused some Japanese words. They looked a bit taken aback, and promptly said they were fine. Afterwards, I realised my mistake and felt so embarrassed. But then I felt a very strong urge to improve my Japanese because I didn’t want to feel that shame again. From this experience, I learned that losing face is a way to gain motivation.

Another benefit of losing face is that it trains your ability to think broader when facing challenges. Losing face is something that many people are afraid of so much that they will rather stick to their old ways of doing things, which will not solve the problem, than try a new way, because they are afraid they will lose face if they do so. But if you stop thinking about how not to lose face, many new ideas might come up. In the end, you might be able to solve the problem with or without losing face. Thus, letting go of the fear of losing face helps encourage our creativity and broaden our perspectives.

Of course, you can lose face by being rude or acting childishly. This kind of losing face can neither encourage your motivation nor broaden your thinking. So I think we need to think about what will cause us to really lose face, and what are in fact just our own fears of failure. Don’t do what will cause us to really lose face, but try to do something that might cause us to lose face yet will also help us grow. As they say, YOLO, which means “you only live once”, it would be a pity if we cannot experience more aspects of our lives just because we are afraid of losing face, which might not even happen.

Well, that’s all for today, and the above is an example of a persuasive article, which means an article written to make others agree with your points. So for today’s question: do you agree with my idea on losing face after listening to my arguments? why or why not? Until next time then, bye bye!
