   Type 1 Diabetes and Pregnancy

   Before the availability of insulin therapy, diabetes was a contraindication to pregnancy. It was recommended that women with type 1 diabetes (T1D) not get pregnant. Today, with intensive insulin therapy, many tools exist to care for people with T1D. Nevertheless, pregnant women with T1D are still considered to have high-risk pregnancies, and susceptible to complications such as fetal overgrowth, or having a large baby. Complications of T1D and pregnancy was the topic of a presentation by Camille Powe, MD, at this year's 13th Annual Type 1 Diabetes Fellows Program. (https://www.endocrine.org/education-and-training/type-1-diabetes-fellows-series) Dr. Powe is co-director of the Diabetes and Pregnancy Program at Massachusetts General Hospital at Mass General Brigham. She’s also Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School. In this episode, Host Aaron Lohr talks with Dr. Powe about the range of complications associated with diabetes in pregnancy, along with insights and updates to provide the best care possible.

   Bisphenols and the Thyroid

   This episode looks at bisphenols and the thyroid, asking questions such as: What is BPA? Where is it found? And what do we know about the possible health risks regarding exposure to it? Host Aaron Lohr talks with Kailey Caroland, a cancer biology PhD candidate at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, about her ENDO 2026 abstract on the topic titled, "Bisphenol A, and Alternative Bisphenols S, F, Increase Proliferation and Growth of Thyroid Follicular Epithelial Cells and Disrupt Thyroid Histology."

   Impact of Androgen Receptors on Estrogen Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer Microenvironments

   Estrogen receptor positive breast cancer (ER+ BC) is the most frequently diagnosed subtype of BC with consequent highest mortality. For patients with ER+ BC, standard of care treatments are endocrine therapies targeting ER expression and activity or aromatase inhibitors that block synthesis of estrogens from adrenal androgens. However, it is estimated that nearly 33% of all patients with ER+ BC will relapse within 15 years, underscoring the need for additional therapeutic options This episode focuses on the role of androgen receptors in breast cancer, as it takes a look at an abstract presented at ENDO 2026, titled, The Impact of Androgen Receptors on Estrogen Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer Microenvironments. […] Also, one of the more common complications is the baby having low blood sugar after birth. And that's because during pregnancy, if a baby has exposure to high blood sugars, then they make their own insulin and they're able to make plenty of their own insulin. And that only not only causes them to grow big, but then like after they deliver, it can, they can have a little trouble shutting that higher level of insulin off and then they can drop their blood sugars. Now that's a temporary problem, but it can sometimes lead to separation between mom and baby. It's a treatable problem. There are other complications after birth that babies who are born to mothers with diabetes may have, like there's a greater risk of having respiratory issues or having high bilirubin levels. […]
