#266 Klima-Wissenschaftsupdate mit Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf "Kippt die atlantische Meereszirkulation AMOC?"
Früher galt der Zusammenbruch der großen atlantischen Meereszirkulation (Volksmund: Golfstrom) als hochgefährliches, aber unwahrscheinliches Szenario. Doch neue Klimadaten und verbesserte Klimamodelle zeigen: Das Risiko für das Erreichen dieses Kipppunktes ist dramatisch gestiegen. Die Folgen für Europa wären katastrophal und könnten schon in den nächsten Jahrzehnten eintreten. Die atlantische Meereszirkulation transportiert große Mengen Wärme nach Europa und sorgt so für unser vergleichsweise mildes Klima. Fällt sie aus, droht Nordeuropa eine Abkühlung um mehrere Grad. In Norddeutschland würde sich durch Erreichen des Kipppunkts die Zahl der Frosttage stark erhöhen. Zugleich nähme der Temperaturunterschied zwischen Nord- und Südeuropa drastisch zu. Die Folge könnten stärkere Stürme und Niederschläge in Europa sein. Dieses Szenario gilt heute nicht mehr als unwahrscheinlich, sondern als realistische Gefahr. Nur durch einen Kurs konsequenten Klimaschutzes lässt sich dieses Schreckensszenario noch mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit verhindern. Der weltweit bekannte und führende Ozeanograph und Klimaforscher Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf forscht seit über 30 Jahren zu diesem Thema. In diesem Europe Calling Webinar wird er den aktuellen Forschungsstand allgemeinverständlich darstellen. Es moderieren Sven Giegold und Maximilian Fries.
