Ep. 256 Maintaining Supply Side Risk

There are some practical aspects of managing supply-side risk that today's Feds at the Edge episode brings to light. Ryan Lewis, DoIT for the state of Illinois, assesses risk by examining vendors, prioritizing compliance, and thoroughly evaluating existing tools before adding new ones.

Rather than starting with the software bill of materials or certifications, a typical government executive would look at risk. Ryan Lewis starts by developing risk assessment profiles for each vendor.

According to Lewis, the best way to understand a vendor's strengths and weaknesses is to build a personal relationship with their representatives.

Compliance is always a consideration when protecting government data. During the interview, Lewis suggests that you look at the value of data and then consider how to protect it.

Most organizations are flooded with tools, many of which promise to save money. Lewis advises you to carefully examine each tool to determine whether it provides value before wasting resources on another tool.

When you take a broader view of risk assessment, you also have to balance budget constraints and security requirements.

Lewis also highlighted the importance of collaboration and of building a culture of integrity and openness.

Ep. 254 The Future of 6G

We have all been amazed by advances in technology; the transition to 6G will provide a drastic improvement in speed. Truly dazzling!

Arup Bhuyan from the Idaho National Lab gives several estimates: downloads moving from 1 GB per second to 100 GB per second; latency significantly reduced; and devices per square kilometer increasing from 1 million to 10 million.

Combined, it gives the federal government the ability to monitor a network in real time and reduce cyber threats.

During the discussion, we are introduced to Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), which gives a network the ability to sense what is within it. This has implications for drone defense.

Eric Freer from Sterling lists even more than speed: more networks in the same physical environment. Sterling argues the federal government needs creative approaches to AI agents that protect the network, give up-to-date encryption, and provide zero-energy sensors.

The panel emphasized the need for international collaboration, significant investments in research and development, and the integration of AI for optimal network performance and security.
