In this episode of Filthy Hope, hosts Rev Ness Williams-Henke and Rev Jon Humphries continue their conversation with Rev Dr Mark Layson, chaplain, former police officer and author of Unexpected Poison. Mark unpacks moral injury: the wound that opens not when you witness something terrible, but when the people meant to have your back betray you. His research found first responders reporting more than two hundred betrayals across a career, and betrayal-type moral injury linking to other mental health conditions three to four times more strongly than trauma exposure alone.
From the paramedic investigated for performing a roadside amputation to the nurse who worked a double shift, gave a fatal dose and never found a way back, Mark traces how organisations protect their reputation at the cost of their people, and why the ones with the best reputations often defend them hardest. Then he turns to repair: just culture, accountability that looks forwards instead of hunting for someone to blame, and the kind of apology that does not contain the word "but".
