Bircoin Needs Dark Pools w/ Janusz

Janusz — CEO of LX — joins Brian on Fundamentals of Fundamentals to rip on a phrase that makes people say "that's cool as f***, but what is it?": Bitcoin dark pools. In TradFi, a dark pool is just confidential, off-order-book matching for large trades: buyer and seller don't know each other, and the trade is disclosed after the fact. It's an entirely legitimate, everyday practice. The problem is that Bitcoin's ledger is completely public. Move a doxxed UTXO from one custodian to an OTC desk and Twitter knows what you're doing before your disclosure does. LX is building the Bitcoin version: pseudonymous peer-to-peer order matching (simple RFQ, no price oracles) with settlement that happens entirely off-chain, so there's nothing for chain surveillance to clock. Under the hood it's a statechain: a 2-of-2 multisig with a co-signer that's completely blind. It doesn't know what it's signing. LX adds zero-knowledge proofs, so a receiver can verify a coin is valid without learning every previous owner of that coin. Users keep native L1 UTXOs and can plug the protocol into the custody and governance policies institutions already use. The conversation also goes where Janusz didn't expect: compliance. If you exclude sanctioned funds, are you still operating in a 21M-bitcoin world? What is "pre-compliance," and why does it happen when regulators refuse to say what the rules are? And could zero knowledge be the cleanest form of compliance there is? In this episode: • The "Janusz" name story: a childhood video-game handle, a Polish Bitcoin community that wanted to know who the new Polish researcher was, and zero Polish ancestry • What a dark pool actually is in TradFi, and why large block trades need it to avoid moving the market • Why Bitcoin makes this harder: public UTXOs, chain-surveillance doxxing, and markets reacting to custodian-to-OTC moves • Privacy as physical security: kidnapping, ransom, and violent attacks on people linked to their coins • The case Janusz made to treasury companies: the next wave of institutional capital will demand private execution • How price discovery works when trades are off the book: RFQ, broker order-splitting, and the market still seeing executed prices • Pools, jurisdictions, and counterparties: proving you meet a compliance threshold without revealing who you are • Brian's challenge: if a market excludes 3M sanctioned coins, are you still operating in a 21M-bitcoin world? • Over-compliance vs. the actual requirement, Tornado Cash, and the Coin Center suit asking the DOJ for a straight answer • Why the best "pre-compliance" may be zero knowledge, plus a plain-English primer on SNARKs, circuits, and why most "ZK" in Bitcoin isn't actually zero-knowledge • Brian's algebra lens: proving two things are equivalent while abstracting away everything non-essential, including identity • Statechains explained: transferring a key share instead of broadcasting, the blind co-signer, and ZK proofs that replace coin-history review • Why a statechain instead of Lightning: direct off-chain receive, no channel opens, and keeping a public good out of the line of fire • Why not Liquid: institutions need native L1 UTXOs and their own threshold governance policies (3-of-5, 4-of-7) • The landscape: Shielded CSV, Ark-style protocols (Bark, Arkade), Spark, Citrea, and why Janusz wants more competitors, not fewer • Security first: recent ecosystem incidents pushed launch from late 2026 to spring 2027 (pre-seed, hardened signers, secure enclaves) • "Dark pools" vs. "boring shit for TradFi CFOs," and why Trojan-horsing the biggest holders is how private execution becomes the standard ️ Brian Hirschfield · Janusz Fundamentals of Fundamentals: first-principles conversations about Bitcoin, money, and the people building it ⚡ Follow: Brian on X: https://x.com/Fundamentals21m (https://x.com/Fundamentals21m) Janusz on X: https://x.com/januszg_ (https://x.com/januszg_) LX: https://lx.dev (https://lx.dev) Magic Internet Math: https://magicinternetmath.com (https://magicinternetmath.com) Further reading: Introducing Zark (by Janusz): https://hackmd.io/kKdngoHBStqRyuFp6x5h-A (https://hackmd.io/kKdngoHBStqRyuFp6x5h-A) Mastering Zcash: A Study in Private Money (Janusz's recommendation): https://maxdesalle.com/mastering-zcash/ (https://maxdesalle.com/mastering-zcash/) #Bitcoin #DarkPools #BitcoinPrivacy #ZeroKnowledge #Statechains #LX #FundamentalsOfFundamentals #InstitutionalBitcoin #Privacy

   Building HiveTalk w/ Karrot

Karrot (@bikarrot) is the pseudonymous builder behind HiveTalk — a Nostr-native, Lightning-powered video-conferencing platform "built for the swarm." This is the first Fundamentals of Fundamentals done as a live demo: the whole episode was recorded inside HiveTalk, wired through Riverside, so you watch Karrot screen-share, zap Brian mid-call, and show the thing working while he explains how it's built. A tightrope walk, and a great one. The through-line is a reframe of what Nostr is actually for. Not the public square — the login. Karrot builds HiveTalk on a LiveKit backend that scales to a thousand people, with Nostr sitting in front as the authentication layer: you sign a NIP-98 note to enter a room, rooms are published as Nostr notes gated to a moderator/trust list, and your pubkey (plus a web-of-trust) becomes a distributed check-mark. In a year of Cold Card seed disasters, fake Zoom links, and voice-cloning, a call where every participant is cryptographically who they say they are is quietly a big unlock — the same thing AnchorWatch is reaching for by requiring video to move funds. From there it opens into the 2026 AI shift. Karrot's Prague dev talk, the agentic tooling that now spins up a whole Lightning/BTCPay stack in 60 seconds, and the hardware breaking inference wide open — Cerebras and Talus running at 1,000–17,000 tokens/second against NVIDIA's ~100. Plus the honest cost: AI has no accountability ("like having a horse in your house"), Karrot's story of an agent burning ~100k sats of e-cash doing proofs nobody asked for ("Claude does not understand how precious sats are"), and why the durable human edge is accountability and collaboration. In this episode: • HiveTalk as a live demo — screen-shares, zaps, and audience mode, recorded inside the product itself • Nostr is the login, not the feed: pubkeys, credentials, and pseudonymous identity as the real value • NIP-98 room auth on a LiveKit backend that scales to 1,000+ — rooms as Nostr notes, gated to a trust list • Why cryptographic call identity matters now: fake Zoom links, voice-cloning, Cold Card fallout, and AnchorWatch requiring video to move funds • The pivot from "client" to infrastructure: a pay-to-relay / DVM model where you vibe-code your own front end and pay for the secure, scalable relay + recording • Value-for-value that shouldn't work but does — 24 months of anonymous monthly zaps keeping HiveTalk running, and skipping the OpenSats/HRF grant path • Lightning's brutal learning curve: BTCPay Server, LNbits, LND vs Core Lightning, Go-lang, Chaincode Labs, and near-burnout (with Evan Kaloudis of Zeus) • The 2026 agentic-AI threshold — Cloudflare's "more bot traffic than human," and whole stacks built in 60 seconds • Inference speed breaking open: NVIDIA ~100 tok/s vs Cerebras (largest-ever hardware IPO) and Talus at ~17,000 tok/s, plus agent orchestration (Codex Spark + SWE) • Vibe-coding guardrails for non-engineers: unit vs regression tests, GSD/GStack, Playwright watchtowers, and "measure twice, cut once" (Brian maps it to automorphisms and field extensions) • Why AI has no accountability — the ~100k-sat e-cash burn, "a horse in your house," and accountability as the human moat • Self-sovereignty as epistemics: programming's tight feedback loop, confirmation bias, and knowing that you know • Nostr Valley (State College, PA, mid-October) with Derek Ross and Seth — and shout-outs to the Cornychat crew ️ Brian Hirschfield · Karrot (@bikarrot) Fundamentals of Fundamentals — a first-principles conversation about Bitcoin, money, and the people building it ⚡ Follow: Karrot on X: https://x.com/bikarrot (https://x.com/bikarrot) HiveTalk: https://hivetalk.org (https://hivetalk.org) Brian on X: https://x.com/Fundamentals21m (https://x.com/Fundamentals21m) Magic Internet Math: https://magicinternetmath.com (https://magicinternetmath.com) #Bitcoin #Nostr #Lightning #HiveTalk #AI #VibeCoding #Cashu #NIP53 #SelfSovereign #FundamentalsOfFundamentals #BitcoinPodcast

Exec. Recruitment on a BTC Standard w/ Scott Ellam

In this episode, I sat down with Scott Ellam, founder and CEO of XCE, to unpack a business model that I think could become a real reference point for how Bitcoin gets used in the real economy. Scott explains why executive recruitment is full of profitable but structurally illiquid firms whose owners often spend decades building valuable businesses without any realistic exit. XCE is trying to change that by acting as a public acquisition vehicle for those firms, using a Bitcoin-backed balance sheet and listed-company structure to create a capital market where one barely existed before. We dug into why this works specifically in recruitment: headcount drives revenue, margins are strong, and owners are often trapped between preserving cash, retaining talent, and hoping someone eventually buys them out. Scott argues that Bitcoin doesn’t just sit on the balance sheet as a treasury asset here—it helps create trust, auditability, long-term alignment, and a performance-based upside that can attract both sellers and top recruiters. We also got into custody, optionality, competition, and the longer-term vision: if this model proves itself in recruitment, it may become a template for other human-capital-heavy industries that have the same fragmentation, same private-market friction, and same need for a credible way to unlock value.
