Tear Down Your Barns

This week, Dennis Allan walks through the Parable of the Barn Builder (or, the Rich Fool). In the kingdom, Jesus makes clear that the life that is truly life is now found in an abundance of possessions. The life that is truly life—namely, Jesus himself—is found when his people use their excess to care for those who have need. Jesus means it when he says, "Whatever you do for the least of these, you do it for me." The barn builder, all on his own, took an abundant harvest and used it to enrich himself even further. What he should've done is brought people from his village together, sought their counsel, and made a communal decision about how to use his newfound abundance. Because, in the first-century, the land was a common good that belonged equally to everyone. It was never meant to become a private good that benefitted some, and not others. The implication is straightforward, but challenging. Our excess, it's obligated to our neighbors. Our abundance, it's meant for the well-being of others. This is the economic life of the kingdom citizens.

Humility and Justification

In the Parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector Jesus upends his original audience's understanding of righteousness and justification. The Pharisee, who modern Christians view as being hypocritical and self-righteous, was a person revered by most ancient Jews. He was faithful, meticulous about his obedience to the law, a man "of the people," and a person whose way of living and being was an example for others. The tax collector was viewed as a collaborationist, an "agent" of Rome, a person who became wealthy by extorting their fellow Jesus. In short, the tax collector was a thief, a person to be scorned. But, in the parable, the tax collector enters the temple, stands to himself, doesn't raise his eyes to heaven, and prays for forgiveness fully aware of his desperate need for God's grace and mercy. The Pharisee, it seems, assumes God is saving a place for him in the kingdom. But, it's the humble, the one who knows their desperate need, who walks away justified.

The Way Up is Down

When Jesus tells the Parable of the Great Banquet he is sitting at a table, at a Sabbath-day banquet, hosted by a prominent Pharisee. It's in that context that he warns the Pharisees, the people who assume because of their religious performance, or because of their wealth and status, that their place in the Kingdom is certain. But in the parable, when the wealthy, influential, and powerful are invited to the king's banquet, they all turn down the invitation, busy with other endeavors. The king doesn't live their house empty, though. The king goes in search of the downcast, overlooked, sick, and poor, and invites them to come to the feast. And they do. The way to the kingdom is not marked by increasing wealth, growing possessions, or expanding influence. It's marked by an intentional and active downward descent, where we empty and humble ourselves for the sake of one another, just like Jesus did. Because in the kingdom, the way up is down.
