[…] And there have been about a dozen or so earthquakes that have been recorded instrumentally. And when those earthquakes move, we see the surface of the earth break in a spectacular fault scarp. When two huge blocks move in an earthquake, they move about two meters in each earthquake. And that ruptures the ground surface. And along the ground surface, we see these roughly 50 to 100 kilometer long breaks that occur during the earthquakes. And those same breaks are very well recorded in the geological history. That is, even if you didn't have the seismological record, you could see the fault scarps upon which repeated earthquakes have occurred. […]
