Eliza has trusted in the healing magic of a girls’ trip ever since she climbed into a car headed for Mardi Gras—in a blizzard. Jersey born and bred, she spent four glorious years at Rutgers University, then wrote her debut novel about it. Overpacked
We went to Salem for three nights with a car and absolutely no baggage restrictions—and somehow still managed to pack the wrong clothes. That got us talking about road trips vs. flying, carry-on vs. checked luggage, and how our travel packing habits might reveal more about us than we realize. Why do some of us overpack? What do we really need when we travel? And what are we carrying because we actually need it versus because we’re afraid not to? Then we put ourselves to the test with a one-bag travel challenge in Manhattan. Could two women who famously overpack really manage three days in New York City with just one bag? Wish us luck.

Salem, Massachusetts turned out to be nothing like we expected—and somehow, exactly what we needed. We went looking for witches, history, and a fun girls’ road trip and found a place that is beautiful, tragic, complicated, welcoming, and a little weird. Which got us thinking: maybe people are like that, too. In this episode, we talk about the different versions of ourselves that show up for other people—and why traveling seems to bring out the most carefree version of us.
