Radio Raps: Rikus de Beer Like You've Never Heard Him Before

This week on Good Things with Brent Lindeque, I sit down with Rikus de Beer, the man behind the wildly popular Radio Raps character, Jonathan. I went into the interview expecting the larger-than-life humour that has made him one of South Africa’s favourite entertainers. While there certainly were laughs, what I didn’t anticipate was just how grounded and deeply inspiring the conversation would become. Hearing him reflect on the turning points in his life gave me a fresh appreciation for the person behind the character. At just 26 years old, a severe illness changed everything. After contracting a near-fatal virus and spending six weeks in ICU, he found himself questioning the life he had built. That experience became the catalyst for a bold decision: he left his corporate career behind and chose to chase a dream that made no sense on paper but felt completely right in his heart. That leap of faith gave birth to Radio Raps, the entertainment brand that would go on to capture South Africans through viral WhatsApp voice notes, unforgettable stand-up performances and the iconic Jonathan character. Alongside the comedy, Rikus also built an impressive business career, becoming the owner of the popular Hennie’s restaurant chain and proving that creativity and entrepreneurship can go hand in hand. This episode isn’t about comedy… at all. It’s about perspective, taking chances, finding purpose after life’s biggest setbacks and discovering that success often begins with the courage to change direction. 🎧 Watch and listen to the episode on all our social platforms (like all of them). 📆 New episodes drop weekly. 🏡 Powered by BetterBond. From Survival to Sovereignty: Leigh van Baalen Shares Her Journey

South Africans were deeply moved by Kelvin van Baalen's remarkable recovery story after a paragliding accident left him fighting for his life. But this week on Good Things with Brent Lindeque, we're hearing from the person who stood beside him through every one of those 413 days. Kelvin spent 413 days in ICU, underwent 27 surgeries, was resuscitated nine times and faced a medical bill of more than R21 million. His recovery inspired thousands, but his mother, Leigh van Baalen, experienced the journey from a very different perspective. On the podcast, Leigh opens up about what it was like watching her son fight for his life and how she found the strength to keep going. As she explains, "You know how you do it? You get up every morning, you put one step in front of the other, you take a deep breath… and you do what you need to do, regardless of what the outcome is going to be. You keep moving." Leigh has since founded the 413 Movement, inspired by the exact number of days Kelvin spent in a burns unit, and has also launched a new book called Survival to Sovereignty. The conversation offers a powerful look at hope, family and finding purpose after life's toughest challenges.
