[…] The Viet Minh had managed to bring in way more artillery and anti-air than they ever thought possible, and they had used it to devastating effect. Colonel Pirot, who was in charge of the artillery and mortar operations on the base, had assured General De Castries, who was the base commander, that there was just simply no way the Viet Minh would be able to touch the French with artillery. The terrain was too restrictive and simply too far away. Yet, as Beatrice and Gabriel now lay in smoking ruins with a thousand French dead, wounded, or missing, he had been proven utterly wrong. Two 105s and their gun crews were dead, one 155 was completely out of commission, and the entire heavy mortar section had been annihilated. […]
