Waste Not Want Not | A thriving food waste entrepreneurs take on the atrocities of wasting food and how she’s helping to solve the global crisis | Tessa Clarke, Co-Founder and CEO of OLIO

“Most human beings have an infinite capacity to take things for granted” - Aldous Huxley, philosopher and author of Brave new World

There are now over 8 billion of us on this planet and devastatingly 1 billion of us go to bed hungry every night. What’s worse is that the issue isn’t the supply of food, it’s the distribution of it.

Over 1/3 of all food produced is never eaten. What's more, food waste contributes 6-8% of greenhouse gas emissions, most of which is concentrated in rich countries like the UK, EU and USA. In this episode, Tessa Clarke, the Founder and CEO of OLIO, speaks about her entrepreneurial journey to disrupt the food waste crisis, an issue that is not only close to her heart but of utmost importance to eliminate.

Tessa explains how her company, OLIO, is tackling the global food waste issue with their free food sharing app that redistributes surplus food from households to other households in the community that are in need of food. OLIO's simple idea has now turned into an extremely successful business model, with millions of households using the app to trade food and other household items. To date, OLIO has raised over $51mm and is scaling quickly also trading other household items alongside.

During the podcast, Tessa discusses where greenhouse gas emissions are produced when we throw away our food, why this is an overwhelming problem in rich parts of the world, and how we can shop more effectively to waste less food. She also shares her experiences tackling biases as a woman founder and highlights why enough isn't being done to tackle the 1 trillion dollar food waste problem. Ultimately, Tessa's message is clear: food must be eaten, not wasted.

Host: Shubhra Jain

Follow up on social media: Instagram: @greennovationpodcast

Money Can Grow On Trees | A climate thought-leader and entrepreneur's views on what ESG investing really means | Gaby Herculano, Founder and CEO of iClima Earth

“The stock market is filled with individuals who know the price of everything, but the value of nothing.” - Philip Fisher, ex stock investor and author

In 2021 global ESG fund AUM stood at $39tn with investment into these types of funds skyrocketing year over year. But when Gaby Herculano’s friend asked for her help to put together an honest portfolio of ESG funds tackling climate change beyond renewable energy ‘they really struggled.’

The incumbent investment managers dominate the ESG investing landscape. And yet their portfolios are not looking at solutions at the front line of solving climate change. Instead the majority of ESG portfolios comprise of blue chip companies who have set carbon reduction targets i.e. “decarbonisation as a cost, not revenue item.” And most of the time, they’re greenwashing.

Gaby Herculano spent over 15 years working as an investor in the energy space, predominantly within renewables. Following the completion of her MBA at Wharton in 2002, she set out on a mission, along with two fellow Wharton grads, to create a platform whereby investors could put their money into solutions which were at the core of reaching net zero, what she describes as ‘green swan’ solutions. Her company, iClima Earth, has almost 1 billion of AUM to date under 6 funds all which put the spotlight on climate change mitigation, adaption and circular economy in the most relevant way.

In this episode, we explore in depth the extreme shortfalls of incumbent ESG fund portfolios, how green investors really think and where we should be putting our money as investors both to make real climate positive impact but also expect to find the highest return potential…

Hosts: Shubhra Jain & Siya Kulkarni

Instagram: @greennovationpodcast

Green Looks Good On You | A Vogue top 30 fashion entrepreneurs thoughts on the mega fashion waste problem | Christina Dean, Founder and CEO of The R-Collective

“There is no beauty in the finest cloth if it makes hunger and unhappiness.” - Mahatma Gandhi

Most of us feel defined by our fashion choices, by the way our clothes make up feel as we walk out the front door. More often than not, without even realising, what we choose to wear can define our personality, define our confidence and define who we are. But how many of us actually consider the production of our clothing, where the very make-up of the fibres in our cloth came from and where it's going when we decide we no longer have use for it?

When Christina Dean cycled through the grey, gritty industrial landscape of southern China in 2017, she did. She saw the ugly consequences of fashion waste and the 'streaky dirty pollution' excess clothing production was causing. A dentist, journalist and today, a sustainable fashion entrepreneur, Christina has dedicated her career to the fashion waste problem, driven by her purpose of transforming an industry which is so important to so many people's lives and one which uniquely connects each of us. The fashion industry accounts for 8% - 10 % of global greenhouse gas emissions, largely stemming from the virgin material production phase. The R Collective, 'disrupts a system of [fashion] waste' giving new life to waste materials produced by luxury brands, to make a dent for the better in the mammoth $1.7 trillion industry as it stands in 2022.

In 'Green Looks Good on You' we contextualise the dire consequences that fashion waste has, why we as consumers need to be more conscious not just about how we look but also about who and where our clothing is coming from as well as take a look at why businesses and investors need to direct their focus on the production phase if they are serious about making an impact.
