Motherhood Beyond Milestones

There’s this quiet but persistent pressure in modern parenting — the belief that we need to do everything early, efficiently, and "right."

Potty training by 18 months. Breastfeeding but only for just long enough. Co-sleeping or not at all. Hospital birth, home birth, epidural, natural — and each decision somehow becomes a measure of our worth.

In this week’s Wild Slow Living podcast episode, I sat down with my friend Heather to talk about all of it — what it really looks like when we release the pressure and allow our parenting to be shaped by real life, not rigid milestones.

Heather and I both shared our experiences with potty training, and how the moment we tried to force it was the moment everything fell apart. For her, it meant sticker charts and resistance. For me, it meant hours of Googling, trying to get my daughter to comply when she just wasn’t ready. Both of us felt the guilt — like maybe we were doing it wrong, or falling behind.

But looking back, it was never about the potty training. It was about trust. About learning to listen — to our kids, and to ourselves.

We talked about co-sleeping, nursing, birth stories, recovery after C-sections, and what it means to make decisions that go against the cultural grain — even when they feel right for your family. And we also talked about how hard it can be to talk about these things, because everyone seems to have an opinion.

The truth is: parenting isn’t a checklist, it’s a relationship. One that’s constantly changing, asking us to grow right alongside our kids.

If you’ve ever felt like you're behind or not doing it “the right way,” this episode is for you.

You’re not alone. You’re not late. You’re not doing it wrong.

You’re a parent, showing up the best you can — and that’s more than enough.

I'd love to hear what part of this conversation resonated with you. Leave a comment or share your story — because the more we talk about this stuff, the less alone we all feel.

With heart,Laura

This is a public episode. Motherhood is Magic, Messy, and Medicine

The Beautiful Chaos of Mothering: What Our Children Teach Us About Ourselves

There’s something wild and holy about motherhood that no one can prepare you for.

No book, no prenatal class, no piece of advice truly captures what it feels like to be the container for someone else’s emotions—while simultaneously navigating your own inner storms. This week, I sat down with my friend Natasha to talk about the parts of parenting that often go unspoken: the nervous system overload, the ego death, the incredible duality of feeling broken open and more whole than ever.

We both agreed on one thing: motherhood is a spiritual path. Not a mountaintop retreat, not a quiet meditation cushion—but a daily, moment-by-moment practice of showing up, surrendering, checking our ego, and loving anyway.

It’s in the tantrums. It’s in the moments your child says something so powerful (and triggering) that you feel your entire belief system shake. It’s in the split seconds when you want to yell, flee, control, or fix—but instead, you breathe, you soften, and you choose presence.

The Mirror of Our Children

One of the most jarring things about parenting is watching your child reflect back everything you’ve taught them... especially when it’s inconvenient.

We teach our daughters to stand up for themselves, to speak their truth, to say how they feel. But when that truth is pointed at us? When they say, “You can’t talk to me like that,” it’s both a punch to the gut and a strange kind of victory.

This is what we wanted, right?

And yet, our inner child gets activated. Our nervous system flares. Our old wounds say, “No, you don’t get to speak like that.”And our soul says, “Yes, let her rise.”

This is the sacred tension we live inside.

Ritual as Regulation

Natasha shared how she uses flower essences to ground herself—both in the daily rhythms of parenting and in the chaos of emotional storms. Just a few drops of oak or yarrow. A breath. A step outside. A return to the body.

These small rituals are not escapes—they're recalibrations.Moments of reconnection.Tiny anchors we throw down in the middle of the whirlwind to remind ourselves: I am safe. I am here. I can hold this.

Motherhood, But Make It Honest

We also talked about social media—how exhausting it can feel to keep up with cycles, algorithms, and expectations when you’re in a deeply personal, inward season of life.

Both of us have had to shift our mindset from performing to sharing. Not out of obligation, but from a place of resonance. Not to be seen, but to connect. And ironically, the less curated it is, the more it seems to land.

Because people don’t want perfection. They want presence.

Let It Be Messy and Magic

This conversation felt like a long exhale. A deep remembering that we’re not alone. That the messiness is part of the magic. That no one gets it right all the time—and that’s not the point anyway.

We’re learning.We’re circling back.We’re growing wild.

If you’re in it right now—if your nervous system is tired, if you’re riding the waves of big emotions in your household, if you’re not sure what kind of parent you are anymore—just know:That’s part of the process. And you’re doing it beautifully.

This is a public episode. The Making of the Bible: Who Decided What We Believe?

In this episode of Growing Wild, we dive into the origins of the Bible, the role of church leaders in shaping Christian doctrine, and the texts that were left out. Join me as I explore the difference between Jesus, the Bible and institutionalized religion, challenge long-held beliefs, and ask: What would Jesus think of modern Christianity? If you're questioning, deconstructing, or simply curious, this conversation is for you.

This is a public episode.
