The GW-CIBER Podcast, Ep. 64 - International Finance with Margarita Oliva Sainz de Aja

In this episode, host Stacie Nevadomski Berdan interviews Margarita Oliva Sainz de Aja. Margarita is a native of Spain and began her career in Granada — but things took a global turn early in her career when she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and decided to pursue a Master of Law from Harvard University. What began as a few years overseas turned into a successful international career in the US working for some of the biggest law firms based in New York. She's now a partner of DLA Piper, LLC, where she applies her 25 years of experience in finance transactions in emerging markets, particularly Latin America, and leads the regional practice. As Margarita shares her global story, practical tips and advice come across, including the need for having an open mind and being able to build relationships with people who are different, the necessity of grit and perseverance because a global career can be quite challenging, and the value of exploring the Latin American region as the great region to grow your career. About Our Guest Margarita Oliva Sainz de Aja is a Partner at DLA Piper US, serving as the US-LatAm Practice Group Regional Co-Leader, Finance, and the US-Iberian Initiative. Based in the New York office, Margarita brings over 25 years of extensive experience in project finance, advising financial institutions and corporations on complex financing and commercial transactions across the Americas. Her expertise lies in structuring and negotiating multijurisdictional infrastructure and energy transactions, working with major multilateral agencies, commercial financial institutions, sponsors, project companies, and export credit agencies (ECAs). Margarita also provides counsel on general bank finance, capital markets, and corporate transactions, including cross-border mergers and acquisitions, restructurings, and outsourcing. She holds a degree from the Senior Executive Program (SEP) Women in Business Scholarship from IESE Business School (2013), an LL.M. from Harvard Law School (1995), where she was a Fulbright Scholar and received an honorary scholarship from Real Colegio Complutense, and a J.D. from Universidad de Granada (1992). The GW-CIBER Podcast, Ep. 63 - International Finance with Kyriakos Petrakakos

In this episode, host Stacie Nevadomski Berdan interviews Kyriakos Petrakakos. Kyriakos graduated in 2008, when the global financial crisis hit his home country of Greece, as well as greater Europe, very hard. He decided to take a risk and pursue a job in Asia. Although he had grown up in several different countries and speaks 5 languages, he describes how difficult it was to start his career beyond his home country and region, yet he believed Asia was where he wanted to be — and he's been happy there for almost two decades. He's lived in Singapore, Shanghai and Bangkok and now works across the region in strategy and mergers & acquisitions (M&A) for Nutreco. Kyriakos encourages graduates to go where the opportunities are, pursue jobs with multinational companies — but not just the Western household names most are familiar with. He believes GDP growth will continue to be greatest in Asia because of the vibrant, diverse economies and business environments. Have a listen and, if you're interested in learning more from Kyriakos, reach out through his LinkedIn. About Our Guest Kyriakos Petrakakos is the Asia head of strategy and corporate development at Nutreco. His background is in strategy/business development (M&A) and P&L management in the chemical, semiconductor and food/feed industries. In his most recent roles, he created and led the strategy and business development departments for PPG PMC and Nutreco in Asia, and for Aalberts Advanced Mechatronics globally. Prior to that, he held various commercial, P&L and strategy/corporate development roles across Asia and the Middle East. Kyriakos has lived, studied and worked in over 10 countries; he is fluent in five languages (English, Italian, Portuguese, French and Greek), and conversant in Mandarin Chinese. He received his MBA from INSEAD, and BSc in Management Science with Honors from the University of Warwick. Kyriakos currently lives in Bangkok, Thailand. One is working for an inspiring mentor he met at GW, and the other is studying Arabic, particularly studying abroad at the American University in Beirut.
