[…] Naples had been conquered 50 years before these events by the King of Aragon, Alfonso V. Upon old Alfie's death, the crown of Naples went to its illegitimate son, meaning the dynasty which now ruled in Naples was an offshoot of the Aragonese ruling family, the House of Trastamara. You might remember from episode 48 that Charles VIII had distant claims to Naples after inheriting the Anjou claim to the kingdom from his father. He successfully captured Naples and had himself crowned king there in February 1495, but his troops were unable to hold onto it after he left in May of that year. The Trostamaran king, whom Charles VIII had deposed, Ferdinando, was able to return triumphantly to Naples in July 1495 with the help of his distant cousin, who, confusingly for our purposes, shared basically the same name, but with whom we are more familiar.
