[…] The number one priority was to find the Bismarck, but that required some guesses on where it might be headed. The plan aboard the Bismarck was always to head back to port after the Battle of the Denmark Strait, and the damage inflicted on the German battleship by the shells of the Prince of Wales. But the British did not necessarily know this, of course, and there were other options, there were other places that the Bismarck could go. One of their fears was that the Bismarck would not head east towards France, but instead west past Greenland. It was believed that German supply ships and tankers were in the vicinity of Greenland, even if the British did not know exactly where those were. […]
