The Estates of Scotland acquiesced, and in 1707, the Act of Union bound England, Wales, and Scotland into a single sovereign state. Anne was now Queen of Great Britain and Ireland. James Stuart attempted to land in Scotland and raise support for an invasion. Parliament wanted to raise militia in Scotland, but Anne withheld her royal assent. fearing the militia would defect and join James.
