I mean, this book thus far is a collection of characters who in one way or another have given up on life. There is a hopelessness that in many ways lingers everywhere. They all live in some degree of misery. And it's the fault, at least in part, because of some of these values in the Irish culture. But really not just in Irish culture, although that's his setting. It's our values as humans that Joyce is criticizing. Well, one of the primary values that Joyce has taken on is valuing the institution of the Catholic Church, unfortunately, which, by the way, this book has not really been well received by many within the Catholic Church.
