#20 - Forgotten Franchises, Development Purgatory and the Prince that Persia'd

On this episode of Hype from Outer Heaven, join Kyle, Brandon, Caleb and Prince as they discuss long-dormant franchises that are in desperate need of a reboot. Franchises like Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia, Legacy of Kain, SOCOM: US Navy Seals etc. are just a few examples of once prolific franchises that have been left at the side of the road. Is it due to a lack of interest? or has the very nature of gaming changed, with investors and publishers not giving long-dead franchises the time of day based on the fact that they would be a financial gamble? If so, they usually end up in development purgatory and eventually cancelled (such is the case of Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun) or doomed to the realm of mediocrity with a chewed up and spat out mobile game that has all the depth and charisma of a jellied eel. From Prince’s love for Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia, to Kyle’s somewhat overlong fanboying for the Legacy of Kain franchise and calls for it’s return, and Caleb’s worry of the return of Duke Nukem in the current political climate, the lads engage in a debate about their forgotten franchises they would like to see return, whilst coming to terms that they’ll all be nearly forty or over by the time The Elder Scrolls VI releases. Stay Frosty! #19 - Telling Stories, The Curse of Uwe Boll and the Videogame Adaptation Boom

On this episode of Hype from Outer Heaven, join Kyle, Brandon, Caleb and Prince as they have a look at the history of videogames that have been given the Hollywood treatment. Having a reputation for being downright awful, its somewhat hard to pinpoint exactly where videogame movies went wrong, as many remember movies such as Super Mario Bros (1993) & Mortal Kombat (1995) with fond nostalgia, only to realise in most cases that we’re looking at them with rose-tinted glasses. With directors such as the infamous: Uwe Boll acting as the catalyst for terrible game-to-movie adaptations (his Alone in the Dark movie is regarded by many as one of the worst movies ever made) it’s no surprise that the medium has been cursed to mediocrity. However, there is a whiff of change in the air following the release of HBO’s critically acclaimed adaptation of Naughty Dog’s: The Last of Us and more recently with Amazon’s live-action Fallout series; could the longer-viewing format of a TV show save video game adaptations where Film could not?

Stay Frosty!

Follow us on social media!

Linktree: https://linktr.ee/hypefromouterheaven

Let’s Feed Brum Donation Page: https://www.letsfeedbrum.com/donate/

Prince’s Redbubble Store: brownmartian.redbubble.com
--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hypefromouterheaven/message

#18 - Bonus Features: The Lost Boys (1987)

“SLEEP ALL DAY. PARTY ALL NIGHT. IT’S FUN TO BE A VAMPIRE.” On this episode of Hype from Outer Heaven, join Kyle and Brandon (Prince is off on his travels and Caleb couldn’t get out of work for this one) as they re-visit one of their most formative movies from their childhoods; Joel Schumacher’s excellent 1987 black comedy, vampire flick: The Lost Boys. Pulling in over $32 million against a $8.5 million budget, The Lost Boys was a commercial and critical success when it released in 1987, spawning multiple sequels and developing one hell of a cult following over the years, making the film one of the most revered vampire movies to ever come out of Hollywood. To quote the back of the VHS box: “Sam and Michael are all-American teens with all-American Interests. Sam likes comic books. Older brother Michael likes girls. But after they move with their mother to peaceful Santa Carla, California, their relationship mysteriously begins to change. Sam still likes comic books. Michael now likes ghouls. Just wait ‘til mom finds out! Want a movie with horror, humour, rock’n’roll? Then sink your teeth into the stylish, with-it horror-comedy The Lost Boys….to give a right now, razor-toothed intensity to vampire tradition, in this must-see shocker packed with heart pounding terror, rib-tickling laughs and body-gyrating rock from INXS and Jimmy Barnes, Lou Gramm, Echo and the Bunnymen and others. Stake out your evening’s entertainment and thrill to vampirism at it’s hippest, funniest, scariest. Party with the Lost Boys!” Featuring Jason Patric, Keifer Sutherland, Corey Feldman & Jami Gertz among others; the cast for The Lost Boys was relatively unheard of upon release, adding to its already stellar legacy with an electrifying cast that gave the movie it’s charm wit and style that has endured for nearly 40 years, solidifying itself as one of the best movies in a decade that was littered with vampire flicks.
