   7. The Stranger, by Albert Camus

The Stranger almost didn't get published: only 4,400 copies could be printed due to WWII shortages! Today, it is the one of the most widely read novels and perhaps the greatest existentialist tale ever written. Camus was the recipient of the 1957 Nobel Prize in Literature at the age of 44, the second-youngest recipient in history, 2 years before dying in a car crash. *** Mom died today. Or, maybe yesterday, I don't know. I received a telegram from the asylum: “Mother deceased. Funeral tomorrow. Best regards.” That doesn't mean anything. Maybe it was yesterday. The old people's asylum is at Marengo, fifty miles from Algiers. I'll take the two o’clock bus and get there in the afternoon. That way I can keep vigil and come back tomorrow evening. I asked my employer for two days’ leave; and he couldn't refuse with such an excuse. Still, he didn't look too happy about it. I even said: “It’s not my fault.” He didn't reply anything. Afterwards it struck me I needn’t have said that. After all, I had no reason to apologize. It was him who should have offered his condolences. He probably will do so the day after tomorrow, when he sees me in mourning. For now, it’s almost as if mom weren’t dead. After the funeral, though, the case will be closed and all will have a more official feel to it. I took the two-o’clock bus. It was very hot. I ate lunch at Chez Céleste restaurant, as usual. Everyone felt very sorry for me, and Céleste said to me, “We have only one mother.” When I left, they walked me to the door. I was a bit distracted because I had to go up to Emmanuel’s place to borrow a black tie and an arm band. He lost his uncle a few months ago.

   1. The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint Exupéry

Let's start with a French classic! This 'children's book' (1943) actually discusses very mature topics of loneliness, love and loss. With about 200M books sold, it is the 2nd best-selling book in history. Translated in more than 300 languages, it is the 2nd most translated work, behind the Bible. The Little Prince is De Saint Exupéry's last published work before his untimely death the following year in a plane crash. Here is the text if you would like to follow along: *** So I lived my life alone, without anyone that I could really talk to, until I had an accident with my plane in the Desert of Sahara, six years ago. Something was broken in my engine. And as I had with me neither a mechanic nor any passengers, I set myself to attempt the difficult repairs all alone. It was a question of life or death for me: I had scarcely enough drinking water to last a week. The first night, then, I went to sleep on the sand, a thousand miles from any human habitation. I was more isolated than a shipwrecked sailor on a raft in the middle of the ocean. Thus you can imagine my amazement, at sunrise, when I was awakened by an odd little voice. It said: "If you please, draw me a sheep!" "What!" "Draw me a sheep..." I jumped to my feet, completely thunderstruck. I blinked my eyes hard. I looked carefully all around me. And I saw a most extraordinary small person, who stood there examining me with great seriousness. Here you may see the best portrait that, later, I was able to make of him. But my drawing is certainly very much less charming than its model. That, however, is not my fault. The grown-ups discouraged me in my painter's career when I was six years old, and I never learned to draw anything, except boas from the outside and boas from the inside. ***

   6. Mirabeau Bridge, by Guillaume Apollinaire

Poet, writer and art critic Guillaume Apollinaire coined the terms Cubism, Orphism and Surrealism and was very much involved in these movements. One of the foremost poets of the 20th century, he wrote poems without punctuation or with letters arranged on the page like drawings, attempting to be resolutely modern. He wrote several erotic novels, one of which was banned until 1970! He was famous upon his death in 1918 of the Spanish flu at 38 years old, and was declared 'Fallen for France' to recognize his service in WWI. *** Under Mirabeau Bridge flows the Seine And our loves Must I remember them Joy always came after pain The night comes the hour chimes The days fade I remain Hand in hand let us stay face to face While below Our arms' bridge passes With eternal regards the wave so slow The night comes the hour chimes The days fade I remain Love goes like this water flows Love goes Like life is slow And how hope is violent The night comes the hour chimes The days fade I remain The days elapse and the weeks elapse Neither the past Nor former loves return again Under Mirabeau Bridge flows the Seine The night comes the hour chimes The days fade I remain *** Sous le pont Mirabeau coule la Seine Et nos amours Faut-il qu'il m'en souvienne La joie venait toujours après la peine Vienne la nuit sonne l'heure Les jours s'en vont je demeure Les mains dans les mains restons face à face Tandis que sous Le pont de nos bras passe Des éternels regards l'onde si lasse Vienne la nuit sonne l'heure Les jours s'en vont je demeure L'amour s'en va comme cette eau courante L'amour s'en va Comme la vie est lente Et comme l'Espérance est violente Vienne la nuit sonne l'heure Les jours s'en vont je demeure Passent les jours et passent les semaines Ni temps passé Ni les amours reviennent Sous le pont Mirabeau coule la Seine Vienne la nuit sonne l'heure Les jours s'en vont je demeure

   5. The Princess of Cleves, by Madame de Lafayette

This novel (1678) debuted a new genre: both as the first historical novel -set in the royal court of the previous century- and as the first to analyze feelings rather than to describe them. Published anonymously - the author was a woman, after all! -, it was a great commercial success. *** Grandeur and gallantry never appeared with more lustre in France, than in the last years of Henry the Second's reign. This Prince was amorous and handsome, and though his passion for Diana of Poitiers Duchess of Valentinois, was of above twenty years standing, it was not the less violent, nor did he give less distinguishing proofs of it. As he was happily turned to excel in bodily exercises, he took a particular delight in them, such as hunting, tennis, running at the ring, and the like diversions. Madam de Valentinois gave spirit to all entertainments of this sort, and appeared at them with grace and beauty equal to that of her grand-daughter, Miss de la Marck, who was then unmarried; the Queen's presence seemed to authorise hers. The Queen was handsome, though not young; she loved grandeur, magnificence and pleasure; she was married to the King while he was Duke of Orleans, during the life of his elder brother the Dauphin, a prince whose great qualities promised in him a worthy successor of his father Francis the First.

   4. The Crow and The Fox, by Jean de La Fontaine

The fable of an outfoxed crow duped by a cheesy line. Every French kid is made to learn this fable by heart in first grade! There are 2 readings possible of De La Fontaine's stories. At first, these cute stories seemed to be teachings directed at kids on morals and values. But De La Fontaine, who lived under the totalitarian regime of Louis XIV, also used animals to criticize the royal power of his time yet avoid censorship... or worse! *** Master Crow, perched on a tree one day, was holding in his beak a cheese. Master Fox, by the odor drawn that way, spoke to him words like these: « Well, Hello Mister Crow! How cute you are! How handsome you grow! On my honor, if your note resembles your coat, You are the phoenix of the dwellers of these woods. » At these words the Crow does exceedingly rejoice; and, to show off his beautiful voice, he opens his beak wide, lets fall his stolen good. The Fox grabs it and says: « My good Sir, you ought to learn that every flatterer lives at the expense of those who hear him out: This lesson is well worth a cheese, no doubt. » The Crow, embarrassed and much in pain, swore, but a little too late, that he would not be duped again.

   3. The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas

Alexandre Dumas explores the themes of jealousy, (in)justice, revenge and forgiveness against the backdrop of the Restoration of monarchy vs. Napoleon regime. A chef-d'oeuvre! *** On the 24th of February 1815, the look-out at Notre-Dame dela Garde signalled the three-master, the Pharaon, from Smyrna, Trieste and Naples. As usual, a pilot put off immediately, and rounding the Chateau d'If, got on board the vessel between the Cape Morgion and Rion Island. Immediately and according to custom, the ramparts of Fort Saint-Jean were covered with spectators; it is always an event at Marseille for a ship to come into port, especially when this ship, like the Pharaon, has been built, rigged, and laden at the old Phocee docks, and belongs to an owner of the city. The ship drew on and had safely passed the strait, which some volcanic shock has made between the Calasareigne and Jaros islands; had doubled Pomegue, and approached the harbor under topsails, jib, and spanker, but so slowly and sedately that the idlers, with that instinct which is the forerunner of evil, asked one another what misfortune could have happened on board. However, those experienced in navigation saw plainly that if any accident had occurred, it was not to the vessel herself, for she bore down with all the evidence of being skillfully handled, the anchor a-cockbill, the jib-boom guys already eased off, and standing by the side of the pilot, who was steering the Pharaon towards the narrow entrance of the inner port, was a young man, who, with activity and vigilant eye, watched every motion of the ship, and repeated each direction of the pilot. The vague disquietude which prevailed among the spectators had so much affected one of the crowd that he did not await the arrival of the vessel in harbor, but jumping into a small skiff, desired to be pulled alongside the Pharaon, which he reached as she rounded into La Reserve basin. When the young man on board saw this person approach, he left his station by the pilot, and, hat in hand, leaned over the ship's bulwarks. He was a fine, tall, slim young fellow of eighteen or twenty, with black eyes, and hair as dark as a raven's wing; and his whole appearance bespoke that calmness and resolution peculiar to men accustomed from their cradle to contend with danger. "Ah, is it you, Dantes?" cried the man in the skiff. "What's the matter? and why have you such an air of sadness aboard?"

   2. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, by Jules Verne

Did you know that Jules Verne is the second most translated author behind Agatha Christie? Of course we had to lose to a Brit! Ugh! Here is the beginning of a great adventure, if you want to follow along: *** The year 1866 was signalized by a remarkable incident, a mysterious and puzzling phenomenon, which doubtless no one has yet forgotten. Not to mention rumors which agitated the maritime population and excited the public mind, even in the interior of continents, seafaring men were particularly excited. Merchants, common sailors, captains of vessels, skippers, both of Europe and America, naval officers of all countries, and the Governments of several States on the two continents, were deeply interested in the matter. For some time, past vessels had been met by "an enormous thing," a long object, spindle-shaped, occasionally phosphorescent, and infinitely larger and more rapid in its movements than a whale. The facts relating to this apparition (entered in various logbooks) agreed in most respects as to the shape of the object or creature in question, the untiring rapidity of its movements, its surprising power of locomotion, and the peculiar life with which it seemed endowed. If it was a whale, it surpassed in size all those hitherto classified in science. Taking into consideration the mean of observations made at divers times (rejecting the timid estimate of those who assigned to this object a length of two hundred feet, equally with the exaggerated opinions which set it down as a mile in width and three in length) we might fairly conclude that this mysterious being surpassed greatly all dimensions admitted by the learned ones of the day, if it existed at all. And that it DID exist was an undeniable fact; and, with that tendency which disposes the human mind in favor of the marvelous, we can understand the excitement produced in the entire world by this supernatural apparition. As to classing it in the list of fables, the idea was out of the question. ***
