I Didn't Want to Get Involved: The Bystander Effect
<p>Would you step in, or would you assume someone else already has?</p><p>This week, one video sent me down a rabbit hole I just had to bring you into. 🐰 A family paddleboarding on a Florida river heard yelling in the distance, paddled toward it, and got a stranded teenager to safety. Their video went viral again in light of the ongoing Nolan Wells case, and it left me with a question: why did they stop when so many people probably wouldn’t?</p><p>I'm telling you three true stories: A man who stood in freezing water for an hour while 75 people watched from the beach, a toddler in a busy market that eighteen people walked past, and the 1964 murder of Kitty Genovese, the case that gave <strong>the bystander effect</strong> its name. Then I'm breaking down the famous New York Times story that got her case wrong turning it into an urban lore, the psychology that turned out to be right though (diffusion of responsibility, pluralistic ignorance, and the weird math your brain does in a crowd), and the 5 Ds of bystander intervention, so you know how to step in safely when your gut says something is off. I'm also sharing two personal stories about why I don't fully rely on the “system”, including one I've only shared with a few people in my life.</p><p><u><strong>Listener note: this episode discusses violent crime, suicide, the exploitation of minors, and domestic violence.
