How an 80-Year Aviation Company Keeps Reinventing Itself

Most companies don’t make it 80 years. Priester Aviation has. But according to Chairman Andy Priester, longevity isn’t about protecting the way things have always been done. It’s about recognizing when the business, the customer, and the industry are changing, then being willing to change with them. In this episode of the Iron Bird Podcast, Dan Harris sits down with Andy to unpack the evolution of one of private aviation’s longest-running family businesses. Andy shares how a company that started as a flight training school in 1945 expanded into airport ownership, maintenance, FBO services, charter, aircraft management, acquisitions, and now fractional ownership. But the conversation goes much deeper than company history. Andy talks openly about returning to the family business after working as an eighth-grade science teacher, learning aviation by being thrown into difficult situations, working alongside his father, and eventually buying the company from him when they realized they shared the same destination but had different ideas about how to get there. They also dive into Priester Aviation’s acquisition strategy, including what went right, what went wrong, and why Andy believes acquiring a company means very little if you destroy the relationships and culture that made it valuable in the first place. Dan and Andy also explore where private aviation is heading, from automated charter quoting and AI to jet cards, fractional ownership, emerging aviation technology, and the growing demand for a simpler customer experience. Through all of it, one idea keeps coming back: Aviation may be built around airplanes, but successful aviation businesses are built around people. ✈️ Key Topics Covered How Priester Aviation survived and evolved for more than 80 years Why customer needs shaped the company from the very beginning The three things Andy believes every successful business needs Why some aviation companies hold onto old business models for too long How technology is making private aviation more accessible The changing role of charter brokers and operators Why long-term customer relationships can matter more than short-term profit What Priester looks for when hiring people Andy’s transition from eighth-grade science teacher to aviation executive What it’s really like working with your father in a family business Why Andy eventually bought Priester Aviation from his father What Priester learned from acquiring Mayo Aviation, Omni, and other businesses Why culture comes first when evaluating an acquisition The difference between integrating an acquisition too slowly and too quickly Why Priester brought private equity into the business How jet cards and fractional ownership reduce friction for customers Why aviation customers increasingly want an “easy button” How charter operators can improve their “time to yes” The case for automated quoting in private aviation Why technology should free salespeople to sell instead of simply processing quotes What the next chapter of Priester Aviation could look like 🔍 Why This Episode Matters Private aviation is changing quickly. Technology is changing how trips are priced and sold. Private equity is reshaping aviation businesses. Customers increasingly expect faster, simpler experiences. And family-owned operators are facing difficult decisions about growth, succession, and consolidation. Priester Aviation has already lived through decades of change. Andy’s story offers a look at what it takes to evolve without losing the relationships, culture, and customer focus that built the company in the first place. Because surviving for 80 years is impressive. Knowing how to keep changing so you can make it to 100 may be even more important.

The Hidden Revenue Most FBOs Are Leaving on the Table

What if your FBO could be performing 50% better without building another hangar or dramatically increasing traffic? In this episode of the Iron Bird Podcast, Dan Harris sits down with Anthony Banome, founder of Banome Inc., to explore why many independent FBOs may be operating far below their true potential. Drawing from his experience at Meridian in Teterboro and Fontainebleau Aviation in Opa-locka, Anthony explains why simply tracking fuel gallons and filling hangars isn’t enough. Real performance comes from understanding the economics of every customer, every movement, and every piece of property. Dan and Anthony discuss how FBOs can use data to identify underperforming accounts, price different customer segments more intelligently, maximize existing real estate, and compete with national chains without simply lowering prices. They also explore why a full ramp doesn’t always mean a successful FBO, when special event fees actually make sense, and how seemingly small operational decisions can quietly eat away at margins year after year. ✈️ Key Topics Covered Why many FBOs could be underperforming by 50% or more How to uncover the true earning potential of an FBO Why building more hangars isn’t always the answer Measuring profitability by customer and aircraft type Why a full ramp doesn’t necessarily mean better business Using data instead of relying solely on gut instinct How independent FBOs can compete with national chains When an FBO customer may actually be costing you money Smarter fuel pricing and customer segmentation Why every FBO should understand its real estate performance When special event fees are actually justified How small operational mistakes quietly destroy margins 🔍 Why This Episode Matters Owning an FBO means controlling an incredibly valuable combination of real estate, fuel, services, and customer relationships. But without understanding how each piece performs, owners can unknowingly leave significant revenue on the table. This episode shows why growth doesn’t always require more hangars, more aircraft, or more capital. Sometimes the biggest opportunity is simply getting more from the operation you already have. 🤝 Episode Sponsors ✈️ Charter Flight Support The only coverage in private aviation that protects you when an aircraft mechanical issue stops your aircraft from flying. Why Private Aviation Software Is About to Get a Lot Cheaper

Private aviation software has traditionally been expensive, disconnected, and heavily dependent on manual work. Wingstack founder Del Castillo believes AI is about to change that. In this episode, Dan and Del discuss how AI has dramatically reduced the cost of software development, why Wingstack decided to offer its platform to brokers for free, and how smaller aviation businesses can use better technology to compete with much larger companies. They also explore the industry's reliance on manual quoting, disconnected CRMs, limited aircraft availability data, and outdated workflows. Rather than replacing brokers, Del sees technology as a way to eliminate repetitive work so teams can focus more on relationships, service, and growing their business. ✈️ Key Topics Covered Why aviation software is becoming cheaper to build How AI is changing software development Why Wingstack is free for charter brokers Automating sourcing, quoting, CRM, and payments How smaller brokerages can compete with larger companies Why technology won't eliminate the need for great brokers Wingstack's vision for a more connected aviation ecosystem 🔍 Why This Episode Matters AI could change the economics of running a private aviation business. Instead of requiring larger teams and expensive software, smaller brokerages may be able to automate more of their operations while keeping the relationships and human expertise that clients value. For brokers and operators, the opportunity isn't simply to replace people with technology. It's to remove unnecessary manual work and build more efficient businesses. 🤝 Episode Sponsor ✈️ Charter Flight Support The only coverage in private aviation that protects you when an aircraft mechanical issue stops your aircraft from flying.
