An Unexpected Gift

Welcome to episode two. In this first season of podcasting - it’s all about storytelling. Last week, I read from the book Braiding Sweetgrass by author Robin Kimmerer from her chapter “Council of Pecans.” This week, I’ve been thinking about my own story of connection as it relates to a conversation about pecans with a stranger--not in a grove, but a grocery store. I remember the evening clearly, even though it was back in 2014. Little did I know, I’d be met with an elderly woman in need of a little help to find such nuts. And in exchange, she asked me if she could give me a hug. It was her way of thanking me for my help. That small gesture is one I won’t ever forget.

A Potawatomi Story

Welcome to my first episode! Today, I invite you into a story from within the Potawatomi tribe. With Thanksgiving around the corner, this is my way of honoring Native American culture. Typically, I won't read straight out of a book, but for today, I decided to share the words of Robin Kimmerer from Braiding Sweetgrass. The chapter is titled "Council of Pecans" and is a beautiful story about the nature of pecans (or pigans - the fruit of the tree known as the pecan hickory) as a means for mutual flourishing. There is much to learn from Native American culture, and much to lament. May we hold this story with gentle care. As you gather around your Thanksgiving table this next week with loved ones (or via Zoom) may you be reminded of the power of belonging, unity, and mutual flourishing. "What happens to one, happens to us all. We can starve together or feast together" (p. 15). Thank you for listening - even as I fully embrace my kindergarten teacher voice. Edit: There is a semi-long pause toward the end of the episode (me thinking) I forgot to edit out.
