[…] When someone misunderstands you, part of your brain, the more primitive part of your brain, can interpret that as, I might lose approval. I might lose connection. I might be rejected. I might not be safe. And that's why being misunderstood can feel so emotionally activating, even when logically you know that someone's opinion really shouldn't matter so much. There's also just the frustration of feeling clear about yourself while someone else is distorting their perception of you. You know your intentions, you know your heart, you know what you meant when you said something. So when someone interprets you inaccurately, it can feel deeply uncomfortable because there's a gap between your internal reality and their perception of you. […]
