<p>Vuoteen 1934 mennessä John Dillingerin jengi oli yksi Yhdysvaltojen kuuluisimmista. Siihen kuuluivat mm. Homer Van Meter, Red Hamilton, Tommy Carroll sekä Baby Face Nelson. Jengi teki pankkiryöstöjä lähes sarjatyönä, siirtyen kaupungista toiseen ja käyden tulitaisteluja virkavallan kanssa.</p><p>FBI, joka oli tuolloin vielä pieni ja kasvava virasto, julisti Johnin lopulta Public Enemy Number One, julkiseksi viholliseksi numero yksi. Hänen kasvonsa koristivat lehtien etusivuja ympäri maata ja palkkio hänen kiinniottamisestaan nousi tuhansiin dollareihin. John oli kuitenkin mestari pakenemaan. Hän vaihtoi olinpaikkaa jatkuvasti, käytti vääriä henkilöllisyyksiä ja jopa turvautui plastiikkakirurgisiin toimenpiteisiin muuttaakseen ulkonäkönsä yrittäen olla askelen viranomaisia edellä.</p><p>Lopulta 22. heinäkuuta 1934, kun John oli ollut elokuvissa tyttöystävänsä Polly Hamiltonin ja heidän ystävänsä Anna Sagen kanssa, FBI piiritti Biograph-teatterin Chicagossa. Hetkeä myöhemmin kuuluisin laman ajan gangsteri makasi kuolleena Chicagon kadulla. <p>Indianapolisissa vuonna 1903 syntynyt John Dillinger joutui jo nuorena vaikeuksiin lain kanssa. Häntä pidettiin levottomana ja uhmakkaana poikana, joka ei sopeutunut isänsä ankaraan kuriin eikä pienen kaupungin hiljaiseen elämään. 21-vuotiaana, vuonna 1924, hän teki ensimmäisen ryöstönsä ja sai kymmenen vuoden vankilatuomion. Vankilassa John tutustui Harry Pierpontiin, Homer Van Meteriin sekä kokeneeseen pankkiryöstäjään Walter Dietrichiin, joka alkoi opettaa heille, kuinka suoritetaan täydellinen pankkiryöstö. Siitä tuli kuin rikollisen oppikoulu, ja John oli lahjakas oppilas.</p><p>Kun John vapautui vankilasta yhdeksän vuoden istumisen jälkeen vuonna 1933, Yhdysvallat eli suuren laman keskellä. Ennen vapautumistaan hän oli tehnyt vankilatovereidensa kanssa sopimuksen, että tekisi ryöstöjä keräten rahaa ja aseita ja auttaisi heidät pakenemaan. Pian vapauduttuaan John teki ensimmäiset ryöstönsä ja onnistui salakuljettamaan aseita vankilaan. Syyskuussa 1933 hänen suunnitelmansa toteutui, kun Harry, Homer ja muut vankitoverit pakenivat näyttävästi Indianan vankilasta. </p><p>Tästä alkoi John Dillingerin ja hänen jenginsä matka kohti <p>Vuonna 1944 Etelä-Carolinan Alcolu oli Jim Crow -lakien hallinnoimaa aluetta, jossa rautatie jakoi kaupungin kahteen osaan. Radan toisella puolella asuivat valkoiset ja toisella puolella mustat.<br>24. maaliskuuta valkoisten puolella asuvat 11-vuotias Betty June Binnicker ja 7-vuotias Mary Emma Thames katosivat ollessaan keräämässä kukkia. Koko kaupunki, niin mustat kuin valkoisetkin, osallistuivat etsintöihin. Seuraavana päivänä tyttöjen ruumiit löydettiin vedellä täyttyneestä ojasta, ja oli selvää, että he olivat joutuneet henkirikoksen uhreiksi. </p><p>Pian epäilykset kohdistuivat mustien puolella asuvaan 14-vuotiaaseen George Stinneyhin, joka oli jutellut tyttöjen kanssa juuri ennen heidän katoamistaan. Oikeudenkäynti kesti vain kaksi ja puoli tuntia, jonka jälkeen valamiehistö harkitsi päätöstään vain kymmenen minuuttia, ja totesi Georgen syylliseksi murhiin.
