[…] And the Lollards were a proto-Reformation group, but their very name was meant to be derogatory. It first appeared in a 1387 mandate against five poor preachers, and it comes from the Dutch meaning mumbler or mutterer, essentially a lazy malcontent. And then it further evolved as a prejudice of the educated churchmen against the uneducated. So if you were a poor, uneducated preacher, you got called a Lollard. If you held the Lollard beliefs, but you were educated, you were a Wycliffied after, of course, John Wycliffe, who inspired many of the Lollard beliefs and sent out many of these poor priests to spread their convictions.
