<p style="color:#333333;font-weight:normal;font-size:16px;line-height:30px;font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;hyphens:auto;text-align:justify;" data-flag="normal"><span>现代长篇小说。徐訏著。上海怀正文化社1946年10月初版。作品以青年哲学家徐的自述形式,写了一个发生在太平洋战争前后的上海的间谍斗争和爱情故事。在上海“孤岛”,环境使徐无法从事他的美与善的哲学研究,因而不得不常在舞厅、酒吧寻求暂时的麻醉。他偶然救了美国海军军官史蒂芬,两人成了好友。由此,他结识了百乐门的红舞女、漂亮而多情的白苹,又结识了有着美国血统、艳若太阳的梅赢子,以及温柔纯真、富有音乐天才的美国少女海伦。他和白苹往来密切、情深缱绻,又欣羡梅嬴子的美艳,醉心于海伦的天赋和纯情。但他坚持独身主义,不特别钟情于一人。直至太平洋战争爆发,他才了解到史蒂芬及其夫人都是美国特工人员,梅嬴子是他们的手下。他在史蒂芬太太的劝导下加入了他们的对日战线,并奉命盗窃被疑为日本间谍的白苹手中的密件。第一次成功了,第二次却暴露了。而白苹实际上是重庆派来的间谍,误会他是受日本间谍指使,奉命处决他,但未致死命。梅嬴子追踪至白苹寓所,拔枪相对,才得以相互了解。于是三人协同作战,亲密无间。在一次窃取日军梅武少将的秘密文件中,他们遇上了劲敌日本女间谍宫间美子。白苹英勇献身,梅、徐二人也暴露了身分。梅杀了宫间美子,为白苹报了仇。徐则婉言拒绝了海伦的恋情,赴内地为抗战尽力。作品“并无充实的生活基础,却以编织浪漫故事,抒发人生哲理见其特色,具有较重的感伤情调”(严家炎《中国现代名流派小说选·前言》)。被看作是抗战后期出现的“后期浪漫派”小说的代表作之一,也是徐訏的代表作品。</span><br /></p>
