How LDS Cultural Beliefs about Motherhood Led Me Away From Christ

Within Latter-day saint culture, there is a belief that mothers need to sacrifice personal activities that would draw them away from the near-total devotion to their children. I personally love the teachings of the restored Church of Jesus Christ, but I believe that this cultural belief does not align with the doctrine of the church. Rather, my experience has been that it has led me away from Jesus Christ and His love.

When I was first a mom, I felt inspired to get a master’s degree in human development and family studies to continue to progress according to God’s will for me. And while I desired to do this and was excited to continue to learn, I still was highly influenced by LDS cultural beliefs about motherhood. I needed to use daycare for my son while I was in classes, and because this took me away from giving him my constant attention and support, I felt I was failing as a mother. This led me to feel extremely shameful and anxious about my son’s well-being. I tried to make up for my lack of involvement by being extra involved and attentive to him whenever I was around him. However, this seemed to make him very needy and demanding, and I felt that I could never give him enough “love.” I also was very overwhelmed with trying to supply what he “needed.”

Read more at the corresponding blog post on this topic!

How LDS Culture Fosters Women's Dependence on External Validation

One aspect of LDS cultural marginalization of women that is not often recognized is how it foster’s women’s dependence on external validation. We are programmed early on to develop a relationship-dependent identity–to base our identity on finding happiness in relationships. We are promised the fairytale ending–finding your “prince,” having the perfect family, and living happily ever after–and there is something that is very addicting about this dream. But my own experience has been that seeking this not only limited by progression and potential, but it limited my relationships.

Read more on the topic in my blog post!
