Grade 4 - Mother's Day Gift Ideas

<p><strong>Mother’s Day is coming up quickly, in this podcast, I’m going to teach you how to make a fun, easy, and inexpensive Mother’s Day gift with your elementary students. It is important to note that not all students will have their mother around but to discuss with them the importance of celebrating a female influence in their lives that they would like to make a gift for. All moms work hard and deserve some pampering every now and then. What better way to pamper your mom than with a sugar scrub! This activity will be fun and engaging for your students, moms will love it, and it will leave your class smelling beautiful!</strong></p> <p><strong>First, you will need to buy supplies. These supplies can be found at the Dollar tree, Family Dollar, or any other inexpensive store you may have near you. You will need to buy a large bag of sugar, white paper gift bags, tissue paper, 4 fl oz disposable tupperware containers, and last but not least, a sweet scented and solid colored dish soap.I usually go with a solid pink or purple color to go with the Mother’s Day theme. I recommend doing this activity in small teacher led groups. While you have your group making the sugar scrub in front of you, have the rest of the class design the paper gift bags. Their independent work time can also be used to write poetry or draw pictures for their Mothers.</strong></p> <p><strong>I recommend keeping the group working with you around five students. Show and explain the materials in front of you to the students. Model how to make the scrub by filling a small container with sugar, leaving some space at the top for the soap. After that, show them how to slowly add in the soap, about ⅓ of a cup of soap, and mix it slowly and carefully in the sugar with a plastic spoon. Remind students to mix slowly so that they don’t get sugary soap all over the floor. For a thicker solution, students can add more sugar, for a thinner solution, have them add more soap. Next, have the students make sure their sugar scrub container is clean before they place it in their decorated gift bag and they can add tissue paper for the finishing touches!</strong></p> <p><strong>Do you have students working remotely who also need an activity? Do not worry! I have activities for them too! Youtube has many great free drawing tutorials for Mother’s Day! My favorite is Artforkidshub.com. They have great tutorials on drawings and even pop-up cards that are great for Mother’s Day! I also recommend doing a thoughtful writing activity with wordart.com. Since the website can be a little overwhelming and difficult for students to navigate, I recommend making a video using ScreenCastify to model what is expected and teach them how to use the tools. These activities can be done completely independently while you work with your in-person students on the sugar scrub.</strong></p> <p><strong>I hope you have found these resources helpful!
